Knowledge = facts + wisdom = principles

I was flipping through the channels on my TV set recently, and happily I came across one of my favourite people, Master Motivator Dr. Bob Schuller.

Dr. Schuller, from Garden Grove, California hosts the longest running TV programme of its kind, 'The Hour of Power', which originates from the world-famous Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove.

Dr. Schuller has authored many, many books, which have inspired millions around the world, to become more successful. He's a protégé of the late, great Norman Vincent Peale, and he's an advocate of what he terms 'Possibility Thinking'.

On the particular programme which I was viewing, and which prompted me to write this article, he said something which I thought was extremely significant. Dr. Schuller said: "All knowledge is based on FACT, whilst wisdom is based on PRINCIPLE". Wow! There's an awful lot of TRUTH contained in that mighty phrase.

Let me explain this powerful concept with the following example, so that all of my valued readers can fully grasp this dynamic revelation. Let's say that a person goes to the doctor, and after a series of lengthy tests, is diagnosed as having cancer.

This knowledge based on facts which the doctor has ascertained, is relayed to the patient. However, this person who has been told that she has incurable cancer, is a 'Spiritually Awake' person. She, believing completely in the Power of God WITHIN, and His Divine Ability as The Master Physician, to rectify the situation, no matter how devastating it appears to be at the time, is an extremely WISE person.

Instead of accepting blindly what the doctor has told her, she meditates daily on her WHOLENESS; she envisions nothing but 'Perfect Health' for her, throughout her entire being. She is WISE, she believes in Divine Principle, and as a result, a so-called 'Miracle' takes place. She is cured completely of her diagnosed incurable cancer.

Now My Friend, lest you think that I'm out of my mind, let me tell you that the type of scenario which I just described to you, is in fact taking place on a daily basis, with people from all walks of life, spread throughout this great big world of ours.

There are clinics which specialize in patients, who have been diagnosed with a so-called 'Fatal Illness', and who have therefore been given a few months to live. The so- called medical experts base their knowledge on The Facts, as they see them at the time of their diagnosis.

However, many of these people, who were told that they would be dead shortly, would just not accept this so-called FACT. Instead, they sought the wisdom of God WITHIN, who as we all know, is capable of achieving anything, even the so-called impossible.

These people's WISDOM based on 'Divine Principle', the 'Principle of Wholeness' manifested itself as 'Perfect Health' in the body; thus a Miracle occurs.

When you become WISE and therefore base your life on Principle, miracles will occur routinely. Believe you me, "To he that BELIEVES, all things ARE POSSIBLE"!

THINK ABOUT IT!

Be open to change
for the better

"One of the most important rules for success is this: Every great success is the result of hundreds and thousands of small efforts and accomplishments that no one ever sees or appreciates." - Brian Tracy, Author and Speaker
My aunt Susan called me several months ago from Andros in an almost panic voice - you see the unthinkable happened! A few months earlier she notices springs popping up through the cushion of her favourite chair and these springs were giving her an unpleasant poke.
This chair was the place she retreats to after a long hard day of working in the field, a place where she would relax and forget about the challenges of the day and life! The place outside of church where she found her moment’s of peace.
Now after years of bringing her comfort the unthinkable has happened, her safe place has fallen into holes and have become uncomfortable. She had tried putting a piece of board under the cushion to fix the problem, it work as the springs no longer poked her but now the chair was not comfortable for her any more!
Finally, after months of trying to make the chair work she has had enough and decided to buy a new chair. She wanted the exact style and was coming to Nassau to buy it herself and she wanted me to get her from the airport that afternoon. On her arrival in Nassau, we headed straight for the furniture store where she had bought her chair many years ago and to her surprise there was the exact chair on display, in fact even the same colour. She headed straight for the chair and sat in it. “What’s this? This isn’t the same chair! Why it’s...it’s hard! There must be some mistake!” She had the sales lady double check the model number and sure enough it was the same chair.
As she ponders what was wrong, I realize the obvious; this chair hasn’t been broken in yet. Pointing this fact out to her made she give the chair another try. She lowers herself into the chair and bounce a little. Firm, not hard, wiggle some more, and then sit up straight again. Trying to convince herself that this is the chair for her.
Then she sees a chair two rows over. The colour is bright but the style is different from the one she is sitting in, “I will buy this chair,” she says “but let me try that one” and pats the arm of the chair as walked away. She then spends a few moments checking out the new chair by pressing down on the cushion with her hands, she rubs her hand over the fabric and smile at the softness. She likes the bright colours and finally convince herself to sit in the chair and to her surprise she liked the way this chair feels and begins to look back at the chair that is the duplicate of her favourite chair with a look that said “it’s time for a change.”
Auntie Susan, decide to buy that chair but what happened over the next few weeks was what was amazing to me. Once that new chair, with its vibrant colours and unworn fabric was in place, she realized that the curtains didn’t match. So she saved money to buy new curtains. She then noticed that the walls look dingy and decided to give the wall a fresh coat of paint. Once the walls were painted, she couldn’t help but notice that there were stains on the carpet and that it was now worn out, which took away from the peaceful room she had now created. So she saved until she had enough to buy her new carpet.

Fisheries needs
protection now

Sir Nicholas Nuttall

Steve McKinney invited me to his show the day after Independence Day to talk about the issues raised in this column. The phones soon lit up and he got a terrific response from some very knowledgeable Bahamian fishing boat captains. While my themes have been on protection of the fish stocks and the culture and way of life which they underpin, it was clear from the phone calls that our brothers who go down to the sea in ships have more immediate and pressing concerns, namely poaching.

What they say is, even if our government managed the fishery perfectly, unless they stop the Dominican boats coming in with 100 divers working off 50 small dinghies and, to quote captain Ignatius Carroll, “taking everything that is big enough to stick on a spear”, we will lose the fishery anyway.
The gallant Captain told us that the boat of a friend of his, Captain Kenny, was surrounded by these mother ships on the banks, which were determined to drive him off. Imagine, foreign poachers have so little respect for our own Independence; they are bold enough to drive Bahamian captains off our fishing grounds!

The Dominicans were scared off eventually when a US Coast Guard helicopter appeared. Our captains have learned not to look to the RBDF for help, because their vessels, even if they are not chasing illegal immigrants or drug smugglers, draw too much water to go over the banks after poachers. I remember three or four years ago thinking that whoever sold the Bahamas two old boats that drew 11 or more feet must have been a super salesman. They can never be of any practical use in our waters.

During a news break shortly after we listened to this appalling story Steve commented that after Independence in 1973 we never realised that we had to take responsibility for our defence. That was something the UK had done, and our young nation had many other priorities. At the mature age of 30, it is high time we took this duty seriously.
Sadly, if the bad guys know you are not looking after your stuff, they will come in and help themselves, laughing at you for being a soft touch. It is not difficult to imagine this kind of abuse leading to a tragedy in which lives are lost.

We have, in our waters at present an unregulated free-for-all, where our own fishermen, so-called sports fishermen and downright thieves are competing for the last unprotected viable fish stocks left in the region. Cuba defends its waters, so does the USA. Britain helps the Turks and Caicos look after their fish. Haiti and The Dominican Republic have no fish left.
Therefore, everyone comes after ours and that is an accident waiting to happen if ever I saw one.
