Dear Sir,
I am writing this correspondence to express my sincere disappointment with the situation associated with the planned development on Great Guana Cay.
As a point of reference, I have travelled to 22 islands in the Caribbean and have seen the devastating negative effects of over development in numerous nations. I am a Licensed Professional Engineer and have been practicing in the Environmental field for over 20 years.
First off, I am disgusted that 105 acres of Crown Land was taken from the people of Great Guana Cay and handed to a developer with a track record of complete disregard for the environrnent. This land belongs to the inhabitants of Great Guana Cay and they should have the ultimate say as to the future use of this property. At a minimum, they should be compensated for the property by the Bahamian Government. BAHAMIANS BEWARE, YOUR CROWN LAND COULD BE THE NEXT TO BE GIVEN AWAY FOR PENNIES ON THE DOLLAR.
The chemicals and fertilisers utilised by golf courses which include organophosphate and the like, are extremely persistent in the environment, and will cause immediate damage to the reef located less than 50 feet from the shoreline. One medium size hurricane will result in the release of millions of gallons of toxic brew into the reef, which will cause devastating and permanent damage to the reef.
The plans for the marina are of even greater concern for the environment of the reef and the island in general. Based on my review of the marina plan and the studies conducted by Dr. Michael Riske, the construction of the marina will destroy mangroves that are critical spawning grounds for bonefish.
Added to the destruction of the mangroves, the marina will quickly turn into a toxic cesspool containing human waste and petroleum contaminants. While I know that the developer has stated that the marina will be a "Blue Star" facility, who will be in charge of verifying and monitoring the water quality? The same people who stated that this development is the most environmental friendly approach possible? These are the same people that are currently running heavy equipment across the beaches to destroy the turtle nesting grounds.
If it is money that drives this rape of the land and people, then it is by money that we will fight this battle. I have personally been responsible for developers on Exuma selling their properties and terrrunating any further investments in the Bahamas until this travesty is halted. I have also started an investigation into the land transfer and have personnel tracking the money trail of the paltry sum of cash paid to the Bahamian government for the Crown Land.
Since it appears the Bahamian Courts have been bought and paid for by the developers, we will take this baffle to the Court of Public Opinion. We are currently discussing this situation with legal counsel and will evaluate our options in the World Court. This wanton destruction of one the most beautiful reefs in the world amounts to crimes against humanity.
It is time for the people of The Bahamas to stand up for their rights and stop the destruction of Great Guana Cay. You may be next. God save the Queen.
Yours, etc.,
Ronald W. Schrack, P. E.
