BFSB announces finalists for 2004 Financial Services Student Award

Nassau, Bahamas – September 21, 2004: The Bahamas Financial Services Board has released the names of five (5) finalists for this year's Financial Services Student Award. This recognition programme was introduced in 2002 in an effort to profile outstanding College of The Bahamas graduates. Nominees are selected based on a minimum GPA, College & Community Involvement, among other criteria. Included in the judging process is an interview with all finalists, and there also is a written submission component of the programme. Nominees are selected from the graduating class of COB, including disciplines such as economics, economics & finance, banking & finance, law and criminal justice, accountancy, computer information systems – for both BBA and AA graduates. Financial services industry reviews new legislation

By MARTELLA MATTHEWS, Guardian Business Reporter, martella@nasguard.com With six pieces of financial legislation in the process of coming into force, The Bahamas government will now turn its attention towards other legislation anxiously awaited on by the industry, the Minister of Financial Services and Investment said Thursday. Giving the luncheon presentation at a Financial Services Legislation Seminar hosted by the Bahamas Financial Services Board along with other industry bodies, Allyson Maynard-Gibson applauded the educational exercise put on by the industry and assured that in the near future attention would be focused on establishing the jurisdiction as an international arbitration centre, the domestic and external insurance acts and securitization among other initiatives. Creating a dialogue on tax reform

By Thea Rutherford The Bahamas Chamber of Commerce as well as the Economic-Commercial Section of the U.S. Embassy wants to make Bahamian business owners as well as the population at large, more aware of the implications that alternative tax systems can have on the country and its citizens. Foundations Bill soon to be marketed

By MARTELLA MATTHEWS, Guardian Business Reporter, martella@nasguard.com Having overcome the hurdle of passing the Foundations Bill through parliament, financial industry professionals in The Bahamas are fine-tuning the regulations for the landmark bill and hope to have the bill ready for presentation to the international financial community very soon. According to the chairman of the Association of International Bank and Trust Companies, Andrew Law, the industry had initially set a personal deadline of Sept. 30. This however, may not be feasible following the calamity left behind by Hurricane Frances' passing earlier this month. More..
