Toast to Commonwealth Brewery

Mugs are being raised for the consistent taste of Commonwealth Brewery's Limited (CBL) Heineken brand, with the company receiving the top score for taste quality among all licensed Heineken breweries in the Americas region for 2009.

It's an award that places the Bahamas' CBL and its 65 employees brewing beer on a daily basis at the top of its industry, beating out nine regional breweries in the process.

"It's really a compliment to the guys who work in the brewery and what they really wanted to do, [which] is to be the best beer in the industry," said Wendell Seymour, Corporate Relations manager. "It's not just significant in Heineken but in the industry.

"We've set the benchmark now and we really have to try and maintain these standards to the best of our ability [because] the customer expects us to come in at this this level every year moving forward."

To win, CBL received a score of 6.6 out of a possible 7 for 2009, following a third place finish in the 2008 quality ratings.

Every month, Heineken breweries from around the world are required to send beer samples to Heineken International. Each sample is tested for taste quality, said the company. The main objective is to ensure that all production partners consistently meet the high quality standards of Heineken beer production. In other words, the process ensures that a Heineken produced in the Bahamas is exactly the same Heineken produced in Brazil, St. Lucia, etc.

CBL is a member of the Burns House Group and has been producing Heineken since the brewery's inception in 1987.

"The fact that in 2009 CBL outperformed some of the best breweries in the world indicates that the team is not satisfied simply with meeting the standards," said a statement from the company sent to Guardian Business. "This means that the beer consumer – whether it is the Bahamian beer lover or visitor to the Bahamas – is getting a fresh, high quality Heineken that is consistent in taste – from case to case, month to month, year to year."
