Christie is dangerous to the environment

Dear Editor,

During the past four years we, along with countless other Bahamians, have had the opportunity to witness the performance of the Christie government. Our conclusion is that things have and are coming apart in his administration.

This 'promising' Prime Minister needs to read the handwriting on the wall. He had an opportunity to do something for the Bahamian people. He has not done so. Instead, he has created pitfalls that it will take the next government of The Bahamas years to correct.

While New Providence is gripped by unbelievable traffic congestion, Mr Christie is busy announcing a new development that will add even more congestion.

Water pressure and supply problems are rearing their heads, again, around New Providence and Mr Christie announces that another upscale residential development and yet another water-guzzling golf course have been approved for New Providence.

How are we going to deal with the additional traffic and drain on our meager water resources?

What is even more surprising is that this new development in south western New Providence, together with the government's grand plan to relocate our commercial port to Clifton pier; will involve a road deviation, the obliteration of hardwood trees, the wanton destruction of wet lands, the carving of canals and the dredging of turning boat basins that will bring absolute environmental degradation to the land and marine resources.

AIl this is the same area of the proposed Clifton Cay development that the Prime Minister and others so vehemently objected to when they were in opposition. Remember Keod Smith, the former Ambassador to the Environment? Not a single word from him or Re-Earth since the Albany announcement. How come? 'Bad' for Ingraham but 'good' for Christie?

Suddenly, the road deviation is no problem. Suddenly another gated community for the wealthy of the world is not a problem; neither is another, exclusive, golf course a problem? The wetlands? No problem! Why?

Infrastructure around the Island continues to suffer. Roads cannot handle the sheer volume of traffic but Mr Christie refuses to implement the carefully- planned road corridor improvements project left in place by the enlightened FNM administration. The telephone company is in absolute disarray, increasing numbers of Bahamians are resorting to using the internet and satellite telephone services, whether legal or not, and the government's response is to do nothing.

The ability of BEC to continue to meet customer demand on any given day is anyone's guess and the government seems powerless to do anything about it.

Mr Christie is a danger to our environment. He is a clear and present threat to good planning. We cannot sustain him and his worthless administration any longer. He is approving and promoting, willy nilly it seems, irreparable damage to our beloved country. He has got to go, sooner rather than later.

Yours, etc.,

Godfrey Collie
