The Shell Saxon Superstars yesterday swept nearly every category to become the unofficial winners of the 2013 New Year's Day Junkanoo Parade.
The Saxons won best lead costume, best execution of theme, best costume, best choreography, best banner, best Shirley Street performance and best overall performance.
The only major category it lost was best music, finishing a close second behind One Family.
The win returned the Saxons to the top spot after a disappointing fourth place finish in the Boxing Day Parade.
According to the unofficial results for the New Year’s Day parade, the Saxons under the theme "Dynasty of the Pharaohs", got a total of 2,812 points for the win.
The Valley Boys, under the theme "Tourism" placed second in the A category taking home a total of 2,707 points. One Family, under the theme “Fire” captured the third place prize with 2,557 points. The Roots, under the theme “The Games That People Play” came in fourth with 2,501 points.
Chairman of the Parade Management Committee Douglas Hanna revealed the results shortly after 7 p.m. yesterday at Arawak Cay before hundreds of spectators.
Both the Music Makers and the Prodigal Sons were disqualified, according to Hanna.
The Nassau Guardian understands that one of the two groups did not have sufficient numbers to qualify as an A group.
The immediate past chairman of the Saxons, Peter Gilcud, told reporters last night that the group deserved the win.
"This is a very sweet victory following the Boxing Day results," he said.
"And I believe that we worked very hard to do this and this is one of the most impressive all-around performances for New Year’s going back to when we came as 'Pirates of the Caribbean'.
"We were big. We were organized. Our costumes were excellent and we succeeded in doing the things we needed to do."
Gilcud also acknowledged the work that the other groups put into their performances.
"I'd like to show appreciation for all of our competitors who gave a very strong fight," he said.
Gilcud added that the win is one for the Saxons’ leadership, members, and fans.
As for the B category, the Z Bandits placed fifth with 2,231 points; Culture Junkanoo Group placed fourth with 2,255 points; Conquerors for Christ placed third with 2,587 points; Fancy Dancers placed second with 2,978 points and Colours won with 3,113 points.
