Registered teams participating in the annual A.F. Adderley Hugh Campbell Basketball Invitational are in for a treat when the tournament tips off on Monday.

It is rumored that organizers are planning something big for the tournament, which caters to high school boys. Celebrating 30 years of play, the week-long event will start on February 20. All games will be played at the Kendal G.L. Isaacs National Gymnasium, unlike the early years of the tournament when they were held at the A.F. Adderley Junior High School.

Principal of A.F. Adderley Drexel Miller said: “That has been one of the things that we don’t have any control of. We [would] much rather have the initial part of the tournament to be held here (at the school) like it was in the beginning, but that will require the gym to be open and up to standard. We are not going to use the gym unless it is conducive to play.”

The tournament will host 25 senior boys teams from around the country. The R.M. Bailey Pacers are the defending champions. They will be back, hoping to successfully defend their title.

One thing is for sure... Miller is confident that the play level is going to be high.

“The tournament has been great over the years. It is a success,” said Miller. “The tournament provides a lot of opportunities for individuals, especially players from the Family Islands who don’t get that exposure on a regular basis. They come into the Hugh Campbell where scouts from colleges abroad and coaches from local teams in New Providence are able to take a look at them and assist with their overall development in the game. Hugh Campbell is really a pilot program for these men. This is a grand opportunity for them to display their talents to the country. We expect to have a high caliber competition from all the teams. No matter how small they are, everyone will be placed in the same limelight to show what they can do. Like usual, the better of the teams will rise to the top.”

Miller did not reveal all the plans that are on the drawing board for the event, but he did mention that a spectacular halftime show is planned for the championship game. He is encouraging students to come out and watch basketball played at a very high level from the high schools.
