D’Nae Baker was the recipient of a $10,000 scholarship to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in Culinary Nutrition at Johnson and Wales University in Miami, Florida.  He was just one of eight students to receive scholarships ranging in total from $2,500 to $10,000 to pursue careers in the hospitality industry.

The eight students, who were awarded the regional tourism scholarships by the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association Educational Foundation (CHTAEF), were praised by the Minister of Education, Science and Technology, Jerome Fitzgerald.

Baker’s scholarship was courtesy of Virgin Holidays Tourism/Hospitality Management Scholarship.

Rache Josey, Deja Rutherford and Krystyn Deveaux will study culinary arts and food service management at Johnson and Wales University in Miami.  Alexis Hanna will also attend Johnson and Wales to study hotel and food lodging management, while Denez Moss will pursue a Bachelor of Arts degree in culinary arts at the Culinary Institute of America.  Alicia Green acquired her scholarship to attend Florida International University to study hospitality management.  Mikiala Dames was also awarded a scholarship.

The education minister said that the partnership between education and tourism continues to reap benefits for Bahamians.  Through the scholarship opportunities he said the tourism industry in the country will continue to grow.

The Caribbean Hotel & Tourism Association Education Foundation (CHTAEF) was established in 1987 as an independent, non-profit organization to fund scholarships and special assistance for the education of Caribbean tourism industry personnel and students pursuing tourism & hospitality careers.  As part of its mission, the education foundation provides people throughout the Caribbean region with an awareness of the varied career opportunities in the industry.
