| Tropical Storm Isaac forms; edging near Bahamas |

Officials from the Bahamas Meteorological Department yesterday warned Bahamians to keep a close eye on Tropical Storm Isaac as it edges nearer to the southern tip of The Bahamas. Officials from the met office said Tropical Depression 9 formed into Tropical Storm Isaac shortly after 5 p.m. yesterday. “We expect that by the weekend, looking at about Saturday, it will be on the southern tip of Haiti,”said Jeffery Greene, a senior meteorologist with the Department of Meteorology. “Depending on the strength of the storm, if this moves further north [on its path] it could potentially be affecting the southeast Bahamas. “Right now, on its projected track, it’s not coming directly to The Bahamas but we could get some effects as it moves towards the west northwest.” Greene said for now, Inagua is the only island in the storm’s path in one of the likely models, but that could change. The storm is moving west at 75 mph with wind speed at 45 mph and is expected to develop into a category 2 hurricane by the weekend. Greene said Bahamians should be on their guard as it crosses the Atlantic and moves closer to The Bahamas. The storm developed east of the Lesser Antilles on Monday night. Last August, Hurricane Irene wreaked havoc on the southern and eastern Bahamas. One year later, islands impacted by Irene are still recovering from the category 3 storm. |
