The Barry University (Miami Shores, Fla.) Alumni Association recently added its first alumni chapter outside of the United States with the founding of the Bahamas Barry Alumni Chapter.  The newest chapter, formally located in Nassau, will service Barry alumni throughout the islands of The Bahamas.

The chapter’s initial meeting occurred on April 11 at the British Colonial Hilton where more than 30 alumni were in attendance to choose chapter board members.  This is the largest attendance at any Barry alumni chapter election to date, and accounts for approximately 20 percent of Bahamas-based alumni that provided contact information to the university.

Barry currently has seven alumni chapters, each with its own board of directors.  Individual alumni chapters work with the Barry University Office of Alumni Relations to promote mutually beneficial relations between the university and its alumni.  The university plans to expand by three chapters in 2013-14 with additions in Palm Beach County, Tampa Bay/St. Petersburg and Jacksonville, Florida.

Barry’s proximity to the islands of The Bahamas has made it a popular destination for Bahamians to achieve their educational goals.  Barry University’s main campus in Miami Shores currently has 22 students from The Bahamas and the university has awarded 192 degrees to Bahamian citizens and residents since 2002.

Beginning in September 2012, Barry began offering four degree programs in Nassau and Freeport.  Barry’s Adrian Dominican School of Education (ADSOE) offers master’s degrees in curriculum and instruction and exceptional student education (ESE), while the School of Social Work offers two variations of the Master of Social Work degree.  In January 2013, the ADSOE added one more degree offering, the Master of Science in organizational learning and leadership.

Barry graduates recently elected to the Bahamas Barry Alumni Chapter are:

• President Braquelle Newton;

• Vice President Pleshette McPhee;

• Secretary Samantha Anderson;

• Treasurer Glenise Wraing;

• Community Outreach Chair Dr. Brendan Francis;

• Programs and Events Co-Chairs Johnette Cooper Lockhart and Tamara Saunders;

• Communications Co-Chairs Jaton Martin and Dwight Strachan.
