The One Love Gospel Getaway is the brainchild of Cathy Hughes, the first African-American woman to head a publicly traded company. Her Washington, D.C.-based Radio One has 53 stations in 16 urban markets.
The One Love Gospel Getaway originally started as a cruise, but 10 years ago, one of those cruises over-nighted in The Bahamas. Hughes was able to orchestrate a concert on the island. The vision of what she saw that night never left her. This year, Hughes decided to make the event an on-land affair and decided on The Bahamas and Atlantis.
“Each year I do a One Love Gospel Cruise that attracts about 2,500 people each year and something just moved me not to do a cruise this year and thank God that voice of God spoke to me because this has been the worst year in the history of the cruise industry. When we decided we weren’t going to do the cruise, The Bahamas was our top choice. We had such a wonderful evening [10 years ago that] the first thing out of my mouth was ‘let’s go back there and do it’,” said Hughes.
“Because of the spirituality of the Bahamian people, it’s a perfect combination for us to bring these great American gospel artists to one of the most spiritual nations in the world.”
During that first on-land concert, she said many of the local pastors joined in the event. She said during the event they could feel the spirit of the Lord on the stage.
Hughes anticipates approximately 2,000 people traveling to The Bahamas for the One Love Gospel Getaway.
While in New Providence for the upcoming event, Hughes said one of the things the organization will be looking at with the artists is making the One Love Gospel Getaway to New Providence an annual event.
“We’re going to have a meeting with the artists, performers and guest participants to ask them how they would feel about us turning this into an annual event and coming to The Bahamas and bringing a big gospel show every year,” she said.
Hughes views the getaway as an opportunity to share a spiritual evening with Bahamians.
Activities that guests can partake in for the One Love Gospel Getaway include Bible study classes, singles dating games, movie night, Zumba fitness classes, empowerment seminars, snorkeling, scuba diving, shark adventures, stingray experience, pottery, rock climbing and karaoke.
