Danny Strachan, the chairman and commodore of the National Family Island Regatta, released the official results of this year’s event, which was held in picturesque Elizabeth’s Harbour, George Town, Exuma. According to the commodore, the regatta lived up to its theme of ‘Celebrating 60 years of Spectacular Sloop Sailing’, and will no doubt go down as the greatest and the best ever. According to him, it was truly a week of spectacular sloop sailing.
The regatta was dedicated to four outstanding contributors over the years – Captain Brooks Miller from Staniel Cay, Exuma; Captain Emmett Munroe from Ragged Island; Captain Harry Harding from Salt Pond, Long Island, and Eleazor ‘Barber J’ Johnson from Acklins Island.
The organizers were especially pleased with the outcome of the regatta in terms of its planning. According to reports, the weather was good and the races were well-run and highly competitive.
“All of the participants are worthy of praise and congratulations for making the event one of the best ever,” said Strachan.
Thousands from all over The Bahamas attended the week-long event in George Town, Exuma. The attendance surprised the committee given the state of the economy. The regatta had a tremendous impact on the economy of Exuma and it is estimated that several million dollars flowed trough the economy as businesses experienced a boom as a result of the regatta.
The event was attended by many dignitaries including Governor General Sir Arthur Foulkes and Lady Foulkes, Prime Minister Perry Christie, Deputy Prime Minister Philip Davis and many other Cabinet ministers. The committee wished to say, “Thank you Bahamas for making the 60th Jubilee Regatta the best ever.”
The committee also wanted to publicly express its thanks and gratitude to all its valuable sponsors – the government, private and corporate sponsors, boat owners, participants, the national and local regatta committees and the Bahamian and foreign spectators who all came together to make the 60th event the best ever.
“We look forward to seeing you next year at the 61st National Family Island Regatta, when the tradition will continue,” said Strachan.
The 61st annual event is scheduled for April 22-26, 2014, in George Town, Exuma.
