BBF Championships to get underway this morning in Grand Bahama

According to reports, everything is now set for the GBPA 11th Bahamas Baseball Federation’s (BBF) Andre Rodgers Championships.

BBF Secretary General Teddy Sweeting said that over 800 boys and girls are expected to be in Grand Bahama this weekend, battling for gold in their respective age brackets.

Also, the BBF will welcome Director of Global Scouting for the Cincinnati Reds Jim Stoeckel and Global Consultant for the Reds Fermin Coronel of Curacao. Stoeckel was the scout who signed Bahamian Jamal Johnson. The theme for this year’s baseball championships is “A Decade of Success and Growing”.

The title sponsor of the event is the Grand Bahama Port Authority, and other sponsors include Insurance Management, FOCOL, Curly Tails, West Grand Bahama District Council, Sawyers, Caribbean Bottling Company, Gold Rock, Pelican Bay and the MailBoat.

A total of 12 leagues are expected to take part in the championships this year. The games will get underway this morning with the Legacy Baseball League taking on the Exuma Little League Association in an 11-12 match-up, in the first game of the day, at 9 a.m. The coach pitch, major and high school divisions will play their games at the Grand Bahama Baseball Park today, and the 13-15 junior division will play their games at the Legacy YMCA Baseball Park today.

The opening ceremony is set for 7:30 p.m. this evening at the Grand Bahama Baseball Park. GBPA President Ian Rolle will bring the welcome remarks and throw out the first pitch. The keynote speaker will be Tabernacle Baptist Academy Principal Norris Bain.

Also, a number of exciting games are set for the first night of competition. Tonight at 8:30 p.m., in a championship rematch from a year ago, Freedom Farm will take on the Junior Baseball League of Nassau (JBLN) in the coach pitch division, in a match that is being dubbed the “Clash of the Islands” Freedom Farm will take on the Grand Bahama Little League team in the 11-12 BBF major division, and also there will be a senior men’s showdown between Grand Bahama and New Providence.

Receiving BBF Lifetime Achievement Awards this year are Lorenzo ‘Doonie’ Lockhart, Eddie Ford, Jeff Williams, Lionel Ferguson Sr. and Rico Hamilton. Also, the BBF will be presenting an Outstanding Achievement crystal award to Bahamian Jervis ‘Champ’ Stuart for being drafted into the major leagues. Stuart, a center fielder from Brevard College in North Carolina, became the first Bahamian to be drafted within the first nine rounds of the Major League Baseball (MLB) Draft as he was taken with the number 176 pick in the sixth round by the New York Mets.
