The Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations (BAAA) ratified a 23-member team last night, that will represent The bahamas at the 14th International Association of Athletic Federations’ (IAAF) World Championships, set for August 10-18, in Moscow, Russia.

The well-balanced team consists of 12 women and 11 males, with the possibility of more being added based on results at the Senior Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Championships this weekend, and other IAAF sanctioned meets leading up to the July 29 deadline for athletes to attain the qualifying standards.

Just nine of the 23 athletes on the list attained the ‘A’ qualifying standard for the Moscow World Championships - a couple of them in two events, the men and women’s 200 and 400 meters (m) for Shaunae Miller and Michael Mathieu. A total of six of the 23 athletes qualified at the ‘B’ standard for the global meet, and the other eight were added for relay purposes. Also, more than half of the team members are under the age of 25.

“This is a great sign for the future,” said BAAA Public Relations Officer Tonique Williams-Darling yesterday. “What really stands out, is that over the last several years, we always had one or two of the older athletes on the team, but this year’s team is predominantly young and it is a very good team as well. It’s a complete changing of the guard. This is a very young team. Debbie is the cornerstone of this team, and even Chris is like a veteran. The young athletes are the bridge to the future. We are seeing a complete changing of the guard, more clearly in track and field than in anything else, and I think that is what stands out the most.”

The female team members are Sheniqua Ferguson - 100m (11.18), Debbie Ferguson-McKenzie - 100m (11.32),

Anthonique Strachan - 200m (22.32), Nivea Smith - 200m (23.17), Shaunae Miller - 200m, 400m (22.45, 50.70), Bianca Stuart - long jump (6.73m - 22’ 1”), Cache Armbrister for the 4x100m relay pool, and Lanece Clarke, Amara Jones, Shakeitha Henfield, Miriam Byfield and Cottrell Martin for the 4x400m relay pool.

The male team members are Derrick Atkins - 100m (10.06), Jamial Rolle - 200m (20.51), Trevorvano Mackey - 200m (20.60), Michael Mathieu - 200m, 400m (20.35, 45.21), Ramon Miller - 400m (44.93), LaToy Williams - 400m (45.26), Chris Brown - 400m (45.29), Jeffery Gibson - 400m hurdles (49.39), Ryan Ingraham - high jump (2.30m - 7’ 6-1/2”), and Wesley Neymour and Stephen Newbold for the 4x400m relay pool. The men’s 4x100m relay team will have an opportunity to qualify at the Sr. CAC Championships this weekend.

“This team is going to be pretty strong,” said Williams-Darling. “We expect a lot of these young athletes to do extremely well. When you look at Shaunae for instance, a 50-point could get you in any final. Anthonique is running very strong and she is poised to make the final as well. Derrick is a former medalist at the world level, and he is running very strong this year. It shows that he is healthy, and he has a very good chance of making the final as well. We have a lot of youngsters to fill the slots this year, but I think that The Bahamas is still in very good hands.”

A 27-member team will compete in the Sr. CAC Championships this weekend.
