The Henan Cultural Performing Arts Group arrived in New Providence on Wednesday, July 31, bringing along with them some of the best Shaolin martial arts performing monks, and some of the nimblest acrobats in China for a breathtaking exhibition.

The group, formed just two years ago, answered the call of the Chinese Government, through its Ministry of Culture, to share the uniqueness of Chinese culture with the world. The Henan group selects monks from the various monasteries in China, looking for the best as they seek to showcase martial arts on a global scale.

The Ministry of Youth, Sports & Culture is hosting the group, which will be lighting up the stage at the National Center for the Performing Arts, also known as the Shirley Street Theatre.

Henry Higgins of the Department of Culture was on hand to greet the group as they arrived on Wednesday. The vice leader of the group spoke on their behalf in the little English that he knew, to say how excited the group is to be in The Bahamas, and that everyone should come out and see the fascinating show they have planned, as it is free of charge.

The main event for public viewing will be Friday, August 2, at the theater, beginning at 7 p.m. The power-packed show will last just an hour, so all attendees are asked to be seated before 7 p.m. on Friday. The ministry is encouraging Bahamians to enjoy the free performance, which will include not only martial arts displays, but also the use of weaponry, such as swords.
