Bucs, Sharks take 2-0 series leads

The New Providence Softball Association (NPSA) continued with its semifinals this past weekend, and it was the Andre Gardiner Construction Buccaneers and the Proper Care Pool Lady Sharks which took commanding 2-0 leads in their respective best-of-five series. The Arnette’s Sporting Lounge Hitmen and Sigma Brackettes can close out their series on Tuesday night, when they face the Miller’s Rams and Lady Hitters respectively. The Brackettes and Lady Hitters will play the first game, at 7 p.m., and the Hitmen and Rams will play the featured contest, at 8:30 p.m. All of the games are played on the Banker’s Field over at the Baillou Hills Sporting Complex.
Buccaneers 12, Mighty Mitts 1
The AG Construction Buccaneers slammed the Mighty Mitts, 12-1, to take a 2-0 lead in their series, and are now just one game away from advancing to the NPSA Championship.
Lead-off hitter Lamar Watkins had three of the nine hits for the Buccaneers. He finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBIs. Watkins finished a triple short of the cycle as he had a homer, a double and a single. Clean-up batter Eric ‘Pappy’ Johnson finished a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs scored and two RBIs. The national team third baseman had a towering two-run shot in the game.
Rudy Fox finished 2-for-3 with a run scored for the Buccaneers, and Angelo Dillet had a hit in one at-bat, and one RBI. He also scored twice.
Anton Gibson and Byron Ferguson both had a hit in one at-bat for the Mighty Mitts. Gibson drove in one run, and Henry Martin scored one run for the Mighty Mitts.
The Buccaneers had nine hits compared to just two for the Mighty Mitts. Both teams had an error.
National team pitcher Thomas Davis was the winning pitcher, while Sean Adderley suffered the loss.
Game Three in the series will be played Thursday night at 8:30 p.m.
Lady Sharks 17, Wildcats 9
The Proper Care Pool Lady Sharks are now just one win away from returning to the NPSA Ladies Championship.
They bombarded the Sigma Wildcats, 17-9, on Saturday night over at the Baillou Hills Sporting Complex.
Vonetta Nairn and Kelly Smith both finished 3-for-5 for the Lady Sharks. Nairn added two runs scored and two RBIs. Treika Munroe had two doubles in three at-bats. She scored three times, and had two RBIs. Marissa Burrows had just one hit in five at-bats, but scored twice and drove in four.
In total, the Sharks slammed out 16 hits, but had six errors in the field.
The Wildcats scored their nine runs off 10 hits, but also had seven errors.
Mary ‘Cruise’ Sweeting finished a home-run short of the cycle as she batted 3-for-4 at the plate. She scored three times and drove in four. Jeannette Hilton had a single and a double in four at-bats, scored twice and drove in one, and Vernie Curry finished 2-for-5 with a run scored.
Alex Gabriel was the winning pitcher, while Sweeting suffered the loss.
Game Three in the best-of-five series will be played on Thursday night, at 7 p.m. The Sharks will be going for the sweep.
