A Haitian man was charged in a magistrate’s court yesterday with manslaughter in connection with the death of his five-month-old daughter.

Blounand Vedrine, 25, of Gregory Town, Eleuthera, is charged in connection with the September 6 death of Berlindia Vedrine.

The circumstances of the baby's death were not revealed in court. However, prosecutor Clifford Daxon said she had bruises on her body.

Vedrine was not required to plead to the charge.

Daxon said the case will be forwarded to the Office of the Attorney General for review.

Daxon objected to bail. He noted that Vedrine has no status in the country, adding that the accused has a work permit that expires next October.

Acting Chief Magistrate Joyann Ferguson-Pratt reserved her decision regarding bail until today.

Daxon said the prosecution intends to proceed by way of a voluntary bill of indictment, which will fast track the matter to the Supreme Court.
