He maketh me to lie down in green pastures. – Psalm 23:2

It was not a pretty sight to see the vast number of highbred cows frozen by a sudden snow storm in the Dakotas. Farmers were caught by surprise and will have to suffer financially, with no doubt the price of beef rising. Included in the deaths were the calves that were the future market. The irony of it all is that these animals were trying to run away from the weather, but the fast falling snow buried the grass, which is winter time, but spring allows the flowers to grow above the snow.

There are a lot of us who become very agitated and jealous when others have achieved wealth or greatness. We do our best to say unkind things, withhold promotions, write untrue confidential reports and just plain do anything in our power to get rid of them, but little do we know, that what you have achieved or amassed was not by might or power but by the spirit of the Lord.

When God causes, arranges, plans or navigates the journey to one’s success in life, it does not matter who gets mad, angry, vex or hyperventilates, for only he and he alone can make one to lie down in green pastures. It does not matter if the pasture is made up of crabgrass, Bermuda grass, golf course grass or whatever, all sustenance for spiritual and moral survival, wellness, prosperity and longevity comes from Him. “He prepareth a table before me in the presence of mine enemies.”

Our text today especially for those who are farmers or have had some experience dealing with sheep, know that sheep are very timid animals and if they are not free from friction among them, or even the buzz of a fly, they refuse to lie down. For them it must be silent night, all is calm. Another thing, is if they are hungry or thirsty, there will be no rest until they are filled. The shepherd is well aware of all peculiarities of the sheep and as such acts accordingly.

Our heavenly father, the good shepherd, knows the makeup of us, as sheep of his pasture. He knows when we are hurting, despondent, discouraged, lonely, financially “famined” and distressed on every side. He knows when tragedy and misfortune suddenly come our way and panic and unbelief sets in. Only he alone can bring succor, comfort and green pastures of peace.

How many times when enemies overwhelm us and fear grips us to the innermost, He makes us to lie down in green pastures of assurance that He will never leave us or forsake us. “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound and disciplined mind.” To get up every day with the Word in your heart, “This is the day the Lord hath made, and I will rejoice and be glad in it,” for he will make me to lie down in green pastures.

Whatever state you may be in today, my dear and faithful readers, know that God is able to completely change your situation from muddy waters, briar patches, hell holes, deep ditches, ambushes and even monkey tamarind fields to green pastures. It is only for accepting Him as your good shepherd.
