1. Can you briefly describe your experience in the tourism sector and what your role is today?

Being such a young person, you could imagine that I do not have a vast amount of experience in the tourism industry, but I am extremely proud of the little bit of experience that I do have. At a very young age, I was given the opportunity to partake in a culinary summer internship at the Atlantis Resort, Paradise Island. That internship really opened up my eyes to tourism and reconfirmed to me that this was the industry I wanted to work in for the rest of my life.

2. Why did you choose to work in tourism as a career?

I did not choose this industry, and I believe that others who work in this industry will agree that there has to be something special in you to be able to make it in this industry. It is not for everyone, but I will credit my Aunt Rosemary who happens to be one of the executive chefs at the Atlantis Paradise Island. My aunt played a major role in opening my eyes to this industry and nurturing my interest and passion for this field; without her I can honestly say I would not be where I am right now in my career.

3. What has been your most memorable moment?

There have been so many of them, but I would say that my proudest most memorable moment would have to be when I competed in the Chaine Des Rotisseur  young chef competition in Chicago. It is my proudest moment because at the competition, I was the only culinary student who competed amongst  chefs who were five to six years ahead of me career-wise, and some of them where even certified executive chefs. The reason I am most proud of this competition is because during the critique part of the competition a number of judges were shocked that they could not tell the difference between my plates and the chefs who were my seniors.

4. Has the industry changed since you started your career? How?

Seeing that I have only been in this industry for the better part of about four years there has been in my opinion not a tremendous amount of change in this industry; yes, there are trends that we adopt and let go but I am specifically talking about the core values of this industry.

5. What should The Bahamas focus on to stay competitive?

It is my strong belief that in order for The Bahamas to stay competitive, we as Bahamians must continue to educate ourselves and become more open-minded and embrace new, innovative and fresh ideas. But we must be sure to never, and I repeat, never, lose our identity while trying to keep up with current global trends. We must remember what made us one of the most desired tourist destinations in the Caribbean and that is the warmth of our people, our rich culture, our beautiful friendly smiles and of course, the bright, bold sun, sand and beautiful turquoise seas.
