While a preseason championship trophy would look good, if added to the Commonwealth Bank Giants’ hardware collection, team members would prefer to snag the win over the Mailboat Cybots, knowing it will be the sweetest revenge and best way to start off the 2013/14 New Providence Basketball Association (NPBA) season.
The Giants are into the preseason championships, but knows the chances of playing the NPBA’s defending champions, the Cybots, for the crown are very high. The Giants secured the first championship berth with a 58-30 win over the Cybots, on Saturday. The loss, placed the Cybots in a wait, watch and see position. They are scheduled to play the winners of the game with the PJC Stingers and Double R Cleaners which tips off today at 8 p.m., over at the A.F. Adderley gymnasium. The Cybots will take to the court on Tuesday, against Monday’s winner. And on Wednesday, the Giants will play the winner of Tuesday’s game.
“One of the things we wanted to do, after looking back at last season was improve in our post game,” said Perry Thompson, head coach of the Giants. “We weren’t happy about a number of things that happened last year. Playing in the preseason gave us an opportunity to work on the areas we fell short in last year, and also allowed us to insert certain persons into rotations, that they normally won’t play in. As a team, we are progressing but still have to improve on bettering ourselves in a number of game situations.
“We are still looking at a number of players. Right now we have a 15-man roster, but can only have 12 in the regular season. So we are looking at who will best suit the needs that can propel us into the championships. The Giants don’t mind playing any of the teams for the preseason championships. We welcome any of the teams. The Stingers are a formidable force, and the Cleaners have also improved, so we can’t look pass them and say we will play the Cybots. It will be nice if we can though and get the win; that will be a big confidence booster for our guys.”
The Cybots defeated the Giants for the 2012/13-championship title and will hope to bounce back from their loss on Saturday night. The Cleaners had a day to recover from their 79-77 win over the Real Deal Shockers on Saturday night. The PJCS defeated the Royal Bahamas Defence Force Mariners, on Friday night, 87-56, and the Shockers took care of the Rockets, 63-52, on Friday.
