The Barracuda Swim club salutes its swimmers who participated in the open water swim races, held recently in New Providence and Abaco.

In New Providence on September 28, Meshach Roberts took home the winning trophy for the 5 kilometer (k) swim with a time of 1:09:02 for ages 13-19. Salene Gibson won the 800 meters (m) in the 8-and-under category. In the 1.6k, 12-and-under girls category, Amber Pinder placed second. Izaak Bastian and Samuel Gibson came in tied for third in the 12-and-under boys category. Other Barracuda swimmers who competed were Katherine Slatter, Christopher Neil, Kaitlyn Slatter, Gershwin Greene, Brandon Deveaux, Kohen Kerr, N’Nyn Fernander and Utoy Wong.

On October 12, Barracuda swimmers travelled to Abaco to participate in the Abaco 5k Open Water Race. Once again, Meshach Roberts walked away with the winning trophy in his division with a time of 1:07:58, with Kohen Kerr placing third with a time of 1:13:43.

This year, 5K Open Water Swimming was officially added to the CARIFTA program. The 2013 CARIFTA Swimming Championships were held in Kingston, Jamaica. Open Water Swimming at the CARIFTA level is open to males and females in the 13-14 and 15-17 categories. Participation in these open water events gives swimmers the opportunity to qualify and represent The Bahamas in international competitions.

“The open water is very challenging and can be a frightening experience to many youngsters,” said Coach Travano McPhee of the Barracuda Swim club, “but our swimmers rose to the challenge and did their best. We are proud of our swimmers. Congratulations Cudas!”
