Police identified the body of a man found floating in a Grand Bahama canal on Monday as 33-year-old Deno Higgs. Higgs apparently drowned in the Silver Point canal around 6 p.m. on Monday while he attempted to save a 10-year-old boy that accompanied him at the canal, police said yesterday. He was a resident of 50 Abaco Drive, Hawksbill, Freeport. Higgs reportedly jumped into the canal to help Joey Cenat who was struggling against the strong current. Higgs was swept away by the intense current and drowned The boy was able to climb out of the canal but complained of a headache and vomiting. He was taken to the Rand Memorial Hospital where he was treated and is detained in stable condition. Police reported that around 6:15 p.m. on Monday a woman telephoned the duty officer at the Police Dispatch Center in Freeport and reported that she saw the body of a black male floating face down in the canal at Silver Point, just east of the Island Seas Resort. Officers were dispatched to the area and examined the body, but found no signs of violence or visible injuries. The body was moved to the morgue at the Rand Memorial Hospital, where an autopsy will be performed in order to determine the exact cause of death. Police do not suspect foul play. |
