Firefighters discovered the burnt remains of a human being on Saturday night after they extinguished a car blaze in the Fox Hill area, police reported yesterday.
According to Superintendent Leon Bethell, who heads the Central Detective Unit, firefighters made the gruesome discovery around 9 p.m., after they were alerted by area residents about an automobile on Step Street which was on fire.
"When fire officers extinguished the fire they found the body of a person in the front passenger seat," Bethell said. "The person was burnt beyond recognition. Right now we're not certain if it was a male or female."
Bethell said that with the assistance of a pathologist, police will do a complete examination of the body today to determine the sex of the victim. He added that an autopsy will also be performed to determine the cause of death.
"Right now we're also doing investigations to find out who the person is. We don't have any information on how he/she got there or how the fire started. We're asking members (of the public) to assist us if they have any information on this," Bethell said.
Police added that the burned car is a Honda.
