A man accused of the fatal stabbing of his coworker on a construction site made his initial appearance before a magistrate yesterday.
Phanuel Charles, 26, of Burial Ground Corner, is charged with murder in the death of Leonard Lionel Johnson, who was killed on November 16.
Both men were working on the construction of the Evangelistic Temple church on Collins Avenue when they got into a fight, according to police.
Charles was not required to enter a plea at his arraignment before Deputy Chief Magistrate Carolita Bethell.
Charles, who has been remanded to prison, will make his next court appearance before Magistrate Guillimina Archer on December 8. Magistrate Archer will schedule a date for the start of a preliminary inquiry at that time.
Magistrate Bethell ordered a policeman to allow Charles to make an official complaint at the Central Police Station after his lawyer Crystal Rutherford-Charles alleged that police had threatened him while in custody.
She also directed Charles be seen by the prison doctor for treatment to a pre-existing injury to his lower right hip and left shoulder at the request of his lawyer. -- -- By Artesia Davis
