Four businesses and one civilian were robbed in New Providence on Wednesday, according to police, who reportedly had two teenagers in custody in connection with one of the robberies.
Those hold-ups add to a number of other armed robberies that have been reported over the last several weeks.
According to police, the first of the five armed robberies occurred around 7:50 a.m.
"The police received information that three males on bicycles were in the area of Old Trail and Soldier Roads, robbing persons," police press liaison officer Sergeant Chrislyn Skippings said. "Police responded and spoke with a [man], who reported that while walking he was approached by three males on bicycles armed with a knife demanding cash."
Skippings said the suspects didn't receive any money, however, they reportedly took the man's jewelry before fleeing the area.
Police were holding two males ages 17 and 18 in connection with the investigation, Skippings said.
The second incident reportedly took place around 2:10 p.m. at Johnson's Convenience Store on Malcolm Road.
Skippings said responding officers received information from an employee of the establishment that a male armed with a handgun entered that store and demanded cash.
The suspect, who was clad in short jeans pants, had gray shirt, and a stocking mask, reportedly took an undetermined amount of cash from the register along with a pack of cigars. He then left with another man, who had been in the store just seconds earlier, Skipping said.
She added that the suspects escaped in a gray Honda vehicle, license plate number 187071.
In a separate matter, police received information around 6:55 p.m. of an armed robbery at Mucka- Mucks clothing store on East Street.
A man clad in a white shirt and blue jeans pants entered the store, armed with a handgun and demanded money, police said.
The man was given an undetermined amount of cash from the cash register and fled on foot in an unknown direction, Skippings reported.
The fourth incident is reported to have occurred around 8:20 p.m. at Munnings Supplies store on Farrington Road.
"The police responded and spoke with an employee of the establishment who informed that two males entered the store, both wearing dark clothing and armed with handguns, demanding cash," reported Skippings.
"Their request was denied and as a result, the men caused damage to items before leaving the store. On leaving a male who was entering the establishment was also robbed by these persons. The men fled in a western direction, where they got into a gold Honda vehicle," she added.
About an hour later, Select Wash House on Providence Avenue, off Boyd Road, was robbed, police reported.
Two males described as being brown skinned, reportedly entered the wash house and held up the establishment. They reportedly got away with an undetermined amount of cash and tokens.
Police are continuing to investigate all five incidents. It is still unclear whether any of the robberies are connected.
Earlier this week, Assistant Commissioner of Police Raymond Gibson admitted that there has been an increase in armed robberies over the last few weeks.
"We term them to be crimes of opportunity. We have already put some initiatives in place so that we can deal with this trend we see going on," said Gibson, who added that it was an ongoing challenge.
He advised people moving about to exercise caution, particularly people arriving at home.
