Five armed robberies in 24 hours

By KRYSTEL ROLLE ~ Guardian Staff Reporter ~ krystel@nasguard.com:

Five armed robberies were reported in the space of 24 hours -- driving the record-breaking crime statistics even higher.

Between Friday night and Saturday night four pedestrians and one business were targeted by gunmen, police reported yesterday.

This comes as crime statistics up to November 24 show that armed robbery and robberies have increased by a shocking 17 and 25 percent, respectively, as compared to the same period last year.

The latest incident occurred sometime around 8:10 p.m. on Saturday, police said.

According to police reports, a woman walking on Shirley Street near Collins Avenue was robbed of an undetermined amount of cash, by two dark men armed with handguns.

The gunmen reportedly fled the area on foot.

Earlier that same day, police received information of an armed robbery at Budget Meats in Coral Harbour.

Police reports indicate that sometime around 8:15 a.m. on Saturday, the store was robbed by a man armed with a handgun.

The suspect fled the area in a gray Honda L/P 180071, with an undetermined amount of cash, according to reports received by the police.

In another incident, sometime around 1:25 a.m. on Saturday, police received information of an armed robbery at Market & Lewis Street.

When officers responded, they spoke with a man who reported that he and his friend had been robbed of their cell phones.

The men were reportedly sitting in the area of Market Street when another man, armed with a handgun, approached.

The suspect also fled on foot in an unknown direction.

The other two robberies both took place on Friday around 10:20 p.m.

According to police reports, a 26-year-old man's 2006 Nissan Maxima was stolen by a masked man, armed with a handgun, in the area of Winton Heights.

The suspect took the man's vehicle and left heading in a westerly direction, police said.

The second incident took place in the area of Comfort and Lewis Streets.

Police said a man was robbed of an undetermined amount of cash and his tennis shoes by a gunman.

The suspect reportedly fled on foot in a northerly direction.

Police are following significant leads in this matter and are continuing to investigate the other robberies, Sergeant Chrislyn Skippings, police press liaison officer, reported.

Armed robberies up to November 24 stood at 786, up from the 670 recorded for the same period last year.

And 283 robberies have been reported up to November 24, compared to 226 in 2008.

Minister of National Security Tommy Turnquest recently expressed grave concern, as the most recent crime statistics obtained by The Nassau Guardian show that serious crimes including murder, armed robbery and robbery have increased over the past months.

"We have been very concerned with the increase and have stepped up initiatives with the police in terms of what they are doing and in terms of addressing it," Minister Turnquest told The Guardian in response to the latest crime figures."

"I can assure that the police have taken this matter extremely seriously. I have mandated them to increase the police presence and we've given them all the resources necessary to work towards getting the guns off the streets."
