A first for the First Ladies

By CHAKARA BENNETT ~ Guardian Intern:

If you are looking for a night of excitement, elegance and some real down home music then the Rahming Brothers' Tribute concert is where you want to be come November 27. For the first time ever a special concert is being held in honor of the nation's three first ladies, Dame Marguerite Pindling, Mrs. Delores Ingraham and Mrs. Bernadette Christie.

Bennett Rahming, one of the six brothers in the group says that this event will be nothing short of phenomenal, since it has been something that he and his brothers have wanted to do for a while now.

"Over the years that my brothers and I got together and have been doing concerts we've truly wanted to do something different than the norm," he said. "The first thing that came to mind was honoring our first ladies, who've always stood in the background and supported the leaders of our country. I feel that this is something really special and different because we are not just having some ceremony with words but rather we are honoring them in song. So, I do believe that it will be great."

This occasion comes as the Rahming Brothers--an all male group out of Bennett's Harbour, Cat Island--celebrate five years as an accapella gospel group. They individually have always enjoyed singing gospel music as they've come from a rich musical background which they have inherited from their parents, the late Bishop Clarence and Rosalee Rahming. Bennett Rahming remembered how important going to church was, even to the drunks in the community. He always remembered how wonderful it was passing by the community bar and hearing the men sing old-time gospel songs in harmony. He said that memories like this and others, namely, their parents' recent demise, contributed to the siblings forming an official group.

In 2008 they entered a gospel quartet competition in Nashville, Tennessee and emerged 2nd overall out of 28 competing groups. They are also the 2008 recipients of the Caribbean Gospel Marlin Awards for Traditional Vocal Performance of the Year (Duo Group), for one of their songs, "Bring Them In."

The Brothers have traveled throughout The Bahamas and the U.S. and are excited to be able to plan an event of this magnitude for such a noble cause. They say that this is only the beginning of the tribute concerts they would like to put on as there are many deserving unsung heroes in our nation.

But don't think the Rahming Brothers are the only attractions for this event. There will be numerous other gospel artists that will also be performing, which include Lee and Joann Callendar.

And to sweeten this already great concert, part proceeds from the event will go to The Salvation Army and the Center for the Deaf, the charities chosen by the three first ladies. This event will be amazing. So, if you really are looking for an exciting and wholesome event then this is where it is happening.
