Along life's road

"And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breadth of life and man became a living soul." — Genesis 2:7.

It does not matter in what state of health you are in, since you are breathing then you are indeed alive! You may not have given careful consideration as to how you go from place to place and are able to perform, devise, articulate and calculate, but you do so at the expense of the air that you breathe. And pray tell me, where does that come from? Take a commercial break to figure it out.

Growing up in a family of 10, my late father always saw to it that we had a good breakfast. I did not grow up on bread and tea but rather, grits, pancakes, oatmeal and cream of wheat. Many times when we did not eat the white rice for dinner, it would be transformed into cereal in the morning by adding water, cream and sugar. So it is that once I get my breakfast of the same likeness, I can go for the day — my body would be able to take the ins and outs of the day, my mind would be clear and my soul would be revived.

Nobody can dispute the fact that death is a reality. You are born — you live and then you die. In times of chaos or accidents and frantic calls are made for help, many times the operator would ask if there is any sign of life. I remember on one occasion when my father was trying to get a point across to me he said " when there is a serious accident, it is no time to find out who is right or wrong, but who is alive."

How devastating it is to be told that there is no sign of life. One's status, personality code, wealth and fame is reduced to one common denominator — you are dead!

In this second chapter and seventh verse of the Book of Genesis we are told of the coming into existence of man — "And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man become a living soul."

It was after the creation of this world and all things therein that God made man to have dominion of all His creation.

And every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew: for the Lord God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground.

But there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground. And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life and man became a living soul.

Your breath is all that you have. It may be that you are all engrossed and submerged in your wealth, your social status, your home and apartments, your job and post, but you are only being all that because of the breath that God has given to you. When your breadth leaves, you are left the original lump of clay. Your breath that allowed you to say all that you wanted to say and do all you wanted to do, is gone back to the source from whence it came to be processed and diagnosed. Your eternal placement will depend on what you did with your borrowed breath.

In spite of all that may be said of individuals when they depart from this world, one thing is certain and that is, every human being has a soul and the "soul of man never dies."

I ask a question today, dear and faithful readers: Are you a good steward of your soul? If you haven't thought about it, it is a good time to begin.
