CARIFESTA: A Caribbean celebration

By Chakara Bennett | Guardian Summer Intern

Just when you thought the party was about to stop, because the children are just about set to head back to school after the summer break, then something else "jumps off".

This time it's a Caribbean-wide party, so you just have to be there, with the kids in tow, for the 10th annual Caribbean Festival of Arts (CARIFESTA) festivities, Aug. 22-31 in Guyana. It's the region's roving, multi-disciplinary mega arts festival which attracts a wide range of creative artists from various Caribbean and Latin American countries.

This is the perfect opportunity to make up for all those festivals you didn't get to attend earlier in the summer, and give your children a taste of the arts at the same time.

So you can expect to be jamming to a serious mix of Reggae, Soca, Calypso, Salsa and many other music genres native to our neighboring Caribbean brothers and sisters. There will also be numerous concerts by popular Caribbean artists who will celebrate the music that seems to have been born in their souls.

Then the real excitement will begin when all the Caribbean nations hit the streets to display their unique type of masquerade — be it carnival style, goombay-style or Junkanoo. It will be a spectrum of color and a plethora of music competing in one place.

And if you thoroughly enjoy our annual international food festival then you will be overjoyed with the wide array of different Caribbean national foods that will be on display for sale at the festival and the products such as jewelry, clothes, baskets and other trinkets that will be available as well.

This is going to be an amazing event that you won't want to miss. So make space on your calendar so that you can proudly support your nation while viewing the cultures of many different nations all packaged in one splendid trip at this year's CARIFESTA.

To ensure that Bahamians get to experience this grand affair, the Ministry of Culture, has arranged special package deals for those wishing to travel to Guyana for the party. Those who have accommodations can travel on the special-chartered flight for $1,500 per person, or for $3,000 per person they can get airfare, single accommodations and ground transportation. And for $2,800 per person, they can share a room, and get airfare and ground transportation.

CARIFESTA, began in 1972 as a means to expand the arts and culture convention in Guyana, has grown into a massive Caribbean affair that also serves as a media for cultural connection among the diverse Caribbean nations today. CARIFESTA is held in a different Caribbean country each year and this year it will be held in Guyana for the second time.

This is bound to be the most extensive Caribbean festival that includes most, if not all of the Caribbean nations as active participants in the event.
