Check yourself at Express Yourself BY SHAVAUGHN MOSS, Special Sections Editor shavaughn@nasguard.com If you haven't checked out Express Yourself, then you're missing something, and if you have, it's time to head back out to Da Island Club in the Nassau Beach Hotel, because no two weeks of the talent explosion is the same. Some weeks it is fire with poets delving deep into their psyche to bring out seriously taboo subjects from love and sex, to politics nothing is sacred. At other times the show grinds to a nice slow pace and Wednesday night was just such a show. It was not crowded, and an intimate friendly atmosphere pervaded the club, and the true artist was revealed in all of the performers that took to the stage. Dawn Hanna had the participation of all present when she orchestrated a musical which she composed from using table tops, water glasses and most appropriately "words". The resulting symphony had patrons applauding wildly at the end. Regulars like the ever-entertaining Obediah Michael Smith, dubbed the "godfather of poetry" from Verse place days, was in his usual form. His poetry drew laughter, and gave food for lasting thought. Smith can be seen next Tuesday at the National Art Gallery where he will be presenting his work. The event begins at 7.30pm and will end in a question and answer session. Dickson Wasake, a Ugandan and current Express yourself DJ was also in top form, Wasake's poems and other stories may be found at his blog spot http://esquire-sunshinepoems.blogspot.com Published poet Sean "Raga Lover" Munnings who is one of the organizers of the event, was also in rare form. Munnings also has a website where pictures of the event may be viewed as well as poetry from his book Deepwaters (deepwatersbahamas.com) and others. Express yourself is a forum for all to share their creativity through every aspect of the arts in a comfortable atmosphere with Bahamian icons looking on from the well decorated walls of the Island Club. The event is free of charge and is currently the only forum of its kind in the Bahamas which allows this indulgence. Express Yourself is held every Wednesday night at The Island Club beginning at 8 p.m. E-mail Story to a Freind |
