By Tyrina Neely:
With all the heaviness in the world I just feel a yearning to be light. That's my philosophical rationale for my current obsession with feathers particularly feathered hairpieces. No it's not a current hot trend, but still uber fashionable and fun!
I recently had a dramatic hair cut and chopped off around 14 inches of my hair. My only justification for this is that I woke up and absolutely could not function until it was gone. I hurriedly called my hair salon, which was closed. So I made two more calls until I found a stylist who could take me immediately, and the rest is history.
With a super short natural cut I have a new appreciation for darling little hair accessories. Things I would never wear when my hair was longer, I'm now hoarding and obsessing about. Whether young or old, headbands are both fashionable and functional. They are a great little savior for dressing up a drab hairstyle, dealing with a bad hair day or coping while growing out bangs.
There are a few fabulous places to score handmade headbands and hairpieces on the cheap. My favorite is local designer house Apryl Afril Accessories. Feathers, leather and jewels combine for beautiful handmade confections for the hair.
I was lucky enough to score a private apparel fitting with one of the designers and started gushing about how I could use one or two pieces for my new do. She pulled out what could only be described as the holy grail of hair accessories tubs full of handmade pieces at sample sale prices $5 each! That has to be cheaper than the cost for the materials as the pieces I scored had beautiful feathers and leather rosettes along the band. It was such a great piece that I wore it for about five days straight! You can contact them for your own custom made piece at aweech@hotmail.com or apryljasmine@gmail.com.
You can create virtually any look with the right headband. If you need a little direction here are three easy looks to achieve with simple headbands.
Boho-chic: Take a ribbon or leather strappy headband and wear it around your forehead for a look that's young, fun and unconventional.
Retro: Polka dot headbands are adorable and in black and white have a fun 1960s flair. Take it to the next level by sporting a silk scarf instead of a traditional headband. Fold the scarf on the bias and tie a knot at the nape of your neck. Let the ends hang freely and twist them so that they fall either to the left or right side of your neck.
Sporty: If you need to dash out of the house in a hurry, having a few elastic headbands are essential. Elastic bra strap inspired bands are perfect for keeping hair out of your face while exercising or just pulling together an effortless, casual look.
If you're a DIY (do-it-yourself) sister with a little creativity then why not take a stab at creating your own masterpiece? You can find a simple thin headband locally for around $2. Stop into a craft store for some feathers or any other statement appliqué of your choice. Then with a little help from your glue gun work your magic. It's a fun activity to do with the little princesses in your life as well!
