Bahamians lead busy lives between their families, jobs and other responsibilities, they're up at the crack of dawn and getting to bed at the last possible minute in hopes of getting a restful night's sleep, before returning to do it all over again. The Nassau Guardian took to the streets to find out how much sleep Bahamians were getting and if they thought it was enough.
"I typically get five hours of sleep a night. I don't think it is enough as recommended but it is enough to keep me functioning. I feel pretty good when I wake up in the mornings. I don't believe that sleep is the only component to good health so I supplement what I may lack with good nutrition and exercise."
Charlene Bain, 49
Health administrator
"I get eight or nine hours of sleep a night. I feel that it is very sufficient and I do feel revived, refreshed and energized in the morning."
Greg Cartwright, 40s
Government worker
"I get eight-and-a-half hours of sleep, sometimes less or sometimes more. If I get the full eight-and-a-half I feel it is enough. But I still wake up groggy and a bit tired most days. I guess it's pretty normal. I don't feel tired throughout the day though only after I eat which I suppose is also normal."
Ana Burrows, 21
Tourism Apprentice
"I get around seven hours of sleep. I think it's enough. I mean it isn't consistent. Sometimes I have a lot of work to do so I get three hours maybe but I do try for seven. I don't usually pay attention to how I feel in the morning. I guess you just get used to whatever you feel and get on with life."
Scharad Lightbourne, 30

"I don't feel that I typically get enough sleep. I usually get to bed around midnight and I'm awake again around five so that I can study. Then I have to get to work for nine in the morning so I have to go straight there and don't get to sleep again before midnight after classes and homework. I usually don't want to get up in the morning when I wake up."
Verneiqua Bethel, 20
Student
"I get around six hours of sleep a night. I go to bed early and wake up early. I feel well-rested mostly but often the way I feel has more to do with what I did that day than anything else. I am a very busy person and I tend to be involved in five or six things at the same time so if I am tired it is because of that more than a lack of sleep."
