By Tyrina Neely:
Everything these days is centered on making a statement. The statement bag gave way to the statement necklace and now the wave of statement sandals for the upcoming spring season.
My mother always tells the tale of her battle to get her girls into wearing heels. Like many children of the island, I lived in flip-flops and flat sandals for virtually all of my teen years. Although I appreciate a great heel, I'm a flat sandal chick at heart so designers' focus on this flat, functional shoe makes my heart skip three beats.
With an infinite variety of sandals to choose from, platform sandals and wedges are still in fashion but the spring and summer seasons will be overrun with flats.
Below are the most popular styles for the summer.
Strappy
Styles are still very reminiscent of the gladiator that has dominated spring and summer sandals for several years. Just when it seemed the gladiator was losing steam it gains new life with a slight twist. If any difference, newer styles feature thicker more substantial straps, covering more of the foot than previous years. Ankle straps are still au courant with variations extending further up the leg as seen last season. Though I'm not a fan, knee high version such as the Sigerson Morrison flat are edgy and fun for the spring when temperatures aren't too hot.
Colors
Bold hues such as cobalt blue, yellow and purple are popular. On the flip side, neutral hues are also in fashion. Nudes are leading the pack with taupe, beige and other light-colored sandals popping up from tons of designers. Metallics are also still a strong trend with gold taking the lead.
Embellished
Studs, floral appliques, chains think of it and there is probably a sandal that is adorned with it. Whether feminine and floral or edgy and studded there is an embellished sandal to suit every taste. Gems, jewels and beads are still popping up for boho chic sandals to pair with light summer dresses.
If comfort and style are high on your list when it comes to fashion, this spring and summer flat sandals should be on the top of your shopping list!
