Nassau Garden Club celebrates 75 years

By NGC, For the Guardian

The Club was formed in l931 by 12 ladies aiming to restore the beauty of New Providence following the devastating Hurricane of 1929. Its founding members were Lady Bancroft, Mrs John Burnside, Mrs Ormond Curry, Mrs Sidney Farrington, Mrs Donald Graham, Mrs Archie Higgs, Mrs H Newell Kelly, Mrs. Kenneth Patterson, Mrs Arthur Sands, Mrs Stafford Sands, Lady Solomon and Miss Minette Solomon.

Since its formation, The Nassau Garden Club has endeavored to uphold the aims of its first president, Lady Solomon, which are: "To foster the love of gardening not only among its club members, but as far as possible among the public in general; to exchange information regarding plants, shrubs and trees, and to introduce new varieties and propagate them for distribution."

Members of The Nassau Garden Club were also responsible for proposing that Tacoma stans, commonly known as Yellow Elder, be adopted as the National Flower of The Bahamas.

Throughout its existence, the Garden Club's members have assisted park and roadside beautification projects in New Providence.

These have included the Princess Anne Park near the British Colonial Hilton, a Hibiscus Garden at Government House, Fort Fincastle, Golden Arch, Malcolm's Park and 50 Royal Palm trees planted along the entrance to the International Airport, plus another 50 flowering trees along the exit. Most recently they have adopted the Sandbox trees on Church Street and had them pruned professionally. Their latest project was planting a beautiful garden with a seating area at the Cancer Caring Center located on East Terrace, Centerville. The Flower Show will be open form 2:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Admission charges for adults are $5 and for children under 12 years - free.

In addition to the floral arrangements and plants, there will be several stands selling crafts and exhibits including the following: Karen Johnson - jewelry, Ma Wells - preserves, Flamingo Nurseries - plants and orchids, The Potting Shed - plants and orchids, Tanya Nunez - plants and orchids, Abaco Neem - oils and lotions, Linda Pritchard - butterflies and A1 Services - tree trimming.
