Give a gift of life

By STAFF WRITER ~ Nassau Guardian:

Heart disease is the number one killer of persons in The Bahamas. Heart disease does not discriminate between race, gender or age. Sadly, for many, heart care is not cheap, nor affordable without assistance. As such, in the midst of economic uncertainty, increasing unemployment and rising health cost, there is a serious need to help to treat and prevent heart problems in others, particularly children.

Under the theme, "Give a gift of life — Preserve a Heart," the 46th Annual Heart Ball will be held at the Sheraton Nassau Beach Hotel on Saturday, February 13, at 7:15 p.m. This is the major fundraiser for The Heart Foundation which aims to assist with the repair of hearts primarily in children. The Heart Foundation also gives support and understanding to parents and families, whether in hospital in The Bahamas or in Florida. To date, no one has ever been turned away.

The highlight of the ball will be the presentation of the Golden Heart Award to one of a number of deserving nominees for their promotion of human welfare and dignity. Nominations can be submitted until Friday, January 15.

The Sir Victor Sassoon Bahamas Heart Foundation is a non-profit organization founded by Lady Evelyn Sassoon in 1961. The Heart Foundation runs primarily on a voluntary and contributory basis.

The Bahamas Heart Association (BHA) is the educational arm of the Foundation. BHA is focused on living a healthy heart lifestyle.

The Heart Association provides speakers and educational materials for schools, youth groups, service clubs, churches, and other public meetings.

The Heart Ball Committee is the fundraising arm of The Heart Foundation. Each year, The Heart Ball Committee hosts two major fundraising events — The Heart Ball and The Annual Tea Party/Fashion Show. Other fundraising activities include the purchase of heart bracelets, and benefit performance for a donation.

The Heart Foundation accepts donations, memorial donations and tax-deductible donations. No amount is ever too small. Being a non-profit organization, The Heart Foundation relies heavily on the generosity of others to meet their goals and encourage Bahamians to lend their support, especially in these tough economic times.
