I watched another simply marvelous program with Dr. Wayne Dyer on PBS over the weekend titled 'Excuses Begone', which incidentally is also the title of Dr. Dyer's latest book, which I would strongly recommend you read. Now, one of the important things which Dr. Dyer highlighted was the following. A very bad habit which unfortunately many of us have is, that just before we go to sleep, let's say for 'The last five minutes' before we nod off, we recall in our mind all of the negative things which happened throughout the day.
Now, all of these negative, very destructive thoughts which we insist on dwelling on during those 'Last Five Minutes' of consciousness before drifting off to 'The Land of Nod', to sleep, descend to our subconscious mind, which of course does not sleep. At this point, Dr. Dyer emphasized the point, that the subconscious mind cannot distinguish between what is real and what is imagined.
Once we go to sleep, hopefully for a good seven to eight hours, the negative thoughts of everything which went wrong during the day, and which are now deep down in the subconscious mind, just marinate during the whole night. So, when we awake the next morning, our consciousness will be literally soaked in, steeped in negativity.
After all, the subconscious cannot distinguish between what is real and what is imagined, so it has accepted the negative destructive thoughts which we planted there by reminiscing on the bad events of yesterday as 'Gospel'. The net result is, that we will have literally set ourselves up for a day full of repeated failure, for that is our mode of thinking upon awakening. My oh my, what a completely unnecessary and indeed avoidable tragedy!
So, the important question surely is, what can we all do to avoid this? The simple answer is to reverse the procedure. In other words, let's use 'The last five minutes' before we drift off to sleep, by thinking about all of the positive, enjoyable, and constructive events which we anticipate will happen tomorrow.
Let's get into the habit of repeating a series of Positive Affirmations like for example 'All is God', 'All is good', 'All is well with me now' just before we fall asleep. The subconscious will then focus on these positive thoughts and concepts while we sleep; the net result will be, that we'll wake up the next morning in a positive, constructive frame of mind. The end result will be, that we'll proceed to have a most productive, and indeed successful day!
