Music of the Beatles at the Yacht Club

It's the Beatles — and the party will be a bit wild on Saturday when the Nassau Amateur Operatic Society (NAOS) hosts a special concert and dinner under the theme "Yesterday: A Tribute To The Beatles," at the Nassau Yacht Club, East Bay Street.

The dinner-show will get underway at 7 p.m. with NAOS members belting out Beatles songs according to event organizer Janice Belton, who says you should come out expecting a fun event.

In the 1960s the music of the Beatles would make the theater go wild. Women would reportedly faint and had to be carried out, protesting in their hysteria, forlorn and wretched in an unrequited love for the four men who looked like they might have lived next door. But if you were born anytime in the 1990s or after you may have only heard about the mass hysteria the Beatles produced whenever they played. If your parents were one of the Beatle maniacs, you probably know all about it, because they're almost in awe when they hear one of their songs.

"This evening is all about having fun, and not for charity or anything of the sort," says Belton. "To be honest there is really no reason why we are having the event. For me it's just another chance to sing. The songs are good, and the Beatles (songs) always bring a crowd."

The Beatles were a pop and rock group from Liverpool, England, and are recognized for leading the mid-1960s musical "British Invasion" into the United States. Although their initial musical style was rooted in 1950s rock and roll and homegrown "skiffle", the group explored genres ranging from Tin Pan Alley to psychedelic rock. Their clothes, styles, and statements made them trend-setters, while their growing social awareness saw their influence extend into the social and cultural revolutions of the 1960s.

The Beatles are one of the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed bands in the history of popular music. In the United Kingdom, The Beatles released more than 40 different singles, and albums that reached number one.

According to the Recording Industry Association of America, The Beatles are the best-selling musical act of all time in the United States.

In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine ranked The Beatles #1 on its list of 100 Greatest Artists of All Time, and according to that same magazine, The Beatles' innovative music and cultural impact helped define the 1960s, and their influence on pop culture is still evident today.

Tickets for this event are $40 for adults, and $20 for kids 12 and under. Dinner is included. A cash bar will be available. For more information call 393-5366.
