Trend report: What to keep and ditch for 2009

The year 2008 was filled with exciting style trends like the triumphant return of the 70s maxi dress, as as well as the delicate lace, cool fedoras and glittery sequined affairs, while there were others that should be swept under the rug — at least for a while. Here's a rundown of what to keep and what to ditch for the New Year.

Neon, Funky Nail Polish

Ditch it! And I'm saying this while I type with hot pink digits! We saw Rihanna and Beyonce rock neon yellow and green manicures this year. Neon is still a big look for spring 2009 but stick to little flashes of color in your clothing instead of on your mani-pedi. Think a hot pink tank slightly peeking out from under a gray pinstripe suit. Subtle doses of neon are best as designers bring the 80s back once again.

Open Toe Booties

Keep 'em! And if you don't have them, get a pair pronto! These are uber chic and will probably take you through most of 2009. Edgy, yet feminine and sexy, these ankle skimming numbers that highlight just a few of your pedicured toes look great paired with skinny jeans or even a pencil skirl and opaque tights.

Keffiyeh Scarves

Ditch it! We saw everyone wearing these Palestinian inspired numbers — from Kanye West to Rachel Ray, who subsequently had her Dunkin' Donuts ad pulled off the air due to the controversy around the scarf.

It's been worn by everyone, and quite frankly as a fashion trend it's now worn out. Not to mention that many of those who don the trend fail to recognize the controversy behind doing so. Simple solution, grab a silk scarf instead — a classy alternative that is sure to add a dose of sophistication to your look.

Statement Necklaces

Keep 'em! Not only do long layered necklaces help to visually elongate the frame, but they instantly jazz up a simple jeans and T-shirt look or little black dress. Featured heavily on Vera Wang's spring runway, these are going to be in fashion well into 2009, so no need to store them away.

Sequins

Keep 'em! Showing up everywhere from clutches to dresses and even shorts this fall, designers are sprinkling their spring 2009 daywear collections with sequins as well. Opt for a sequined cardigan or camisole under your suit this spring and ditch any other accessories.

Stay looking chic in 2009. The upcoming trends cater to everyone, from the resurgence of more relaxed fit trousers, to the revamping of the little black dress. Keep reading 'Tyrina Talks Fashion' in the New Year for all the latest tips, tricks and fashion trend reports.
