Dressing for the day of love
By Tyrina Neely:
St. Valentine's Day is upon us. For a single sister not planning to even think about dressing up for Valentine's Day, karma dealt me a hand of jokers with more ladies than I can count requesting personal shopping for dia del amor. The questions came rolling in. Do I wear red or white, sexy or classy, cleavage or legs, or both?
Tasks for February

February is one of the dormant months when pruning of shrubs for shape and size and the removal of dead, diseased or damage branches is carried out.
Real love is unselfish
By D. Paul Reilly:
Unfortunately, as we all know only too well, the divorce rate throughout the world is reported to be at least 50%. That is, 50% of ALL marriages end in divorce. Now, one may ask, and understandably so, why is this? After all, we must presume that when people get married, in most cases, the parties to the marriage are indeed madly in love with each other, or at least it would appear that this is so, as one observes the average marriage ceremony. But, upon deeper examination and reflection, is what appears on the surface to be the case, REAL LOVE?
The medi pedi the new trend in pedicures
By Shavaughn Moss ~ Lifestyles Editor ~ shavaughn@nasguard.com:
For years women and discerning men have engaged in the standard "fluff and buff" pedicures, the soothing relaxing service which incorporates scents, masks, scrubs, paraffin dips, but a concern for many has been the sterilization process practices by nail technicians which many people have found wanting at best.

Keep chocolates away from pets
By Dr. Bridgette Johnson:
Valentine's Day is fast approaching and it is a time when chocolate sales are at their peak. Most pet owners are aware that chocolate can be harmful even fatal to their pets. And they may not understand why this delectable treat for us can be so detrimental to the pets' health.
Quantity or quality, what's important?
By Barrington Brennen:
Why do we honor people for having given long service to a company? Why do we honor couples who have been married for a long time? It is my humble opinion that longevity or quantity is not always quality, especially when it comes to human relationships. Often many of the people we honor for long service at a company would have only given mediocre service. The golden trophy or beautiful plaque would tell falsely of their service. And how they boast as their ego is inflated.
Hate is binding
By D. Paul Reilly:
There's no doubt about it 'Hate' is one of the most destructive, negative forces in the world. And as I wrote about in another article some time ago 'Hate Hurts The Hater'. That's right, when you hate another, most of the time, the person whom you hate is not even aware of it. So, the only person you're really hurting in the long run is you. Why, the unenlightened may say in their ignorance? Because 'Hate begets Hate', that is, according to The Law of Cause & Effect, what you put out is what you ultimately MUST get back, it must come back to you, right from where it originated.

Quilt show is a display of passion
By Shavaughn Moss ~ Lifestyles Editor shavaughn@nasguard.com:
Quilting is many things to different people. For some it's a covering to keep them warm on a cold night. For others, selecting the colors and fabrics that are needed to produce the finished product that keeps the other person warm is the joyous experience. Quilters are a rare breed unto themselves. To hear quilters tell their stories of why they do what they do may come out differently, but in the end it all means the same thing they quilt for the sheer pleasure of it. They make quilts because they want to. Some follow patterns, some don't. They love quilting and fabric and want to show their passion to the world.

Simple but profound
By d. Paul Reilly:
I have been slowly reading a most wonderful book titled '10 secrets for success and inner peace', which I know we're all seeking, written by one of my all time favorite teachers Dr. Wayne Dyer. Yesterday, I read The Seventh Secret which is 'There are no justified resentments'. When I had finished the short chapter, I immediately wrote down the title of this article 'Simple but profound'.
Do you get enough sleep?
Bahamians lead busy lives between their families, jobs and other responsibilities, they're up at the crack of dawn and getting to bed at the last possible minute in hopes of getting a restful night's sleep, before returning to do it all over again. The Nassau Guardian took to the streets to find out how much sleep Bahamians were getting and if they thought it was enough.
"I typically get five hours of sleep a night. I don't think it is enough as recommended but it is enough to keep me functioning. I feel pretty good when I wake up in the mornings. I don't believe that sleep is the only component to good health so I supplement what I may lack with good nutrition and exercise."
Demand more of yourself
By Natasha Brown:
A little history lesson, ladies! In the days of early Greece, from whence the Olympic Games originated, the human physique was idealized and celebrated so much so that athletes wore no clothing. It was considered natural to go nude so proud were they of their bodies. The good citizens of the ancient cities worked endlessly to sculpt physically perfect bodies. Living in a community that worshiped the divine human form, it was easier to follow along with the rest working out, eating right and taking care of oneself. And they did.
Acne in cats
By Dr. Bridgette Johnson:
Feline acne is a common occurrence in cats. There are sebaceous glands fund in the skin that are associated with the hair follicle. These glands produce a substance called sebum that helps to keep the hair and skin lubricated and prevents them from drying out. Sometimes these glands can become blocked which forms the comedones (blackheads) on the chin and/or lips of the cat. Unlike human acne, feline acne is not limited to puberty. This condition can occur in any age or gender of cats and can wax and wane throughout the lifetime of the cat.
The fog will dissipate
By D. Paul Reilly:
Joel Osteen in his weekly broadcast on television recently told, how when he was leaving Calgary, Canada on a flight one morning, there was fog at the airport, thus the flight was delayed. Eventually it dissipated enough around the actual airport to allow the plane to take off. As the plane gained altitude and broke through the veil of fog, the sky was filled with brilliant light from the rays of the sun.

The people in your life
By D. Paul Reilly:
The title of a talk which I listened to given by Dr. Paul Masters President of The University of Metaphysics on the internet last Sunday was 'Karmic Relationships'. Believe you me, it was a most illuminating talk crammed full of some extremely interesting concepts. The basis of what he was saying in a nutshell is this. All of 'The people in your life' are indeed meant to be in your life for a very definite reason. There is no such thing as a chance meeting, there are no coincidences.
Pottery catching fire
By Raquel Pinder ~ Guardian Intern:
The art of molding and creating oftentimes ends in a masterpiece if only in the eye of the person that created it. To stand back and witness a lump of clay transformed into something beautiful and functional and to know that you created it with your own hands, gives one a sense of personal accomplishment.

It just creeps up
By D. Paul Reilly:
Last night on television, I watched another edition of the eye-opening, and so often heart wrenching show 'Intervention' on The Arts & Entertainment (A & E) channel on TV. They told the story of a most likeable, lovable, good-1ooking, highly intelligent, hard working young man, who just loved to drink and party with his older(by a few years) brother. Of course, initially he was able to still function properly at his work. Then, tragedy struck his family as another brother was charged and convicted for first degree murder.

Keep things in perspective
BY D. PAUL REILLY:
There's no doubt about it, we need to at all times, take the very sound advice given in the title of this article and thus 'Keep things in Perspective'. So, what exactly do we mean by that statement? Well, to me 'Keeping things in perspective' means, that we always remain level headed and balanced, thus we do not allow any aspect of our life to get us down, or for that matter, go to our head. One of the things which we really need to keep in perspective, is that life consists of much more than the material.
Melanomas in dogs
BY Dr. Bridgette Johnson:
Melanomas are a type of tumor that arises from a specialized group of cells called melanocytes, that produce pigment. These tumors can be either benign or malignant. The risk of the benign melanomas spreading is very low, but the malignant melanomas have a higher risk of spreading and presenting several challenges to effectively treating the affected animal. It is therefore very important to act quickly when faced with possible melanomas so as to increase the chances of successful removal and identification of the grade or stage of tumor.

Wrapped up: How to wear your scarf
Last weekend was a chiller! With all my winter wear stored comfortably in a Manhattan storage facility, I was left defenseless as unexpected 50-degree weather moved in.
Whenever I make a remark about cold weather among family and friends I always get the side eye which is quickly followed by "girl you lived in New York, you should be used to this." I don't think I will ever get accustomed to the cold weather but if you're like me, here are some tips to help you cope over the next few days.

Growing roses from cutting, air-layering, seed or budding is an inexpensive method of producing new rose plants for your garden, however, it will take your plants about two years to mature to a good sized flowering plant.
I give the day to God
Last Sunday, as with every Sunday, I was listening to Dr. Paul Masters President of The University of Metaphysics on the internet. During his talk, which was titled 'The Christ Mind' he suggested that we all need to learn to live spiritually, so that we can be open at all times to direction from our 'Source', The Creator of The Universe, God. He advocated, that in order to do this, first thing in the morning upon awakening, we simply give the upcoming day and night to God. In other words, we surrender to 'The Christ' which is WITHIN each and every one of us, and allow this Creative Force to literally take over all of our thoughts and actions.
As I listened to Dr. Masters, I thought to myself, this is the way in which to continually live a spiritually based life. Yes indeed it most surely is! If we'd all follow these simple instructions and thus turn over our lives to The Spirit WITHIN, each and every day, we'd actually have a world full of Spirit-led citizens working together for the overall good of the world, as they were led from 'On High'....what a beautiful thought. You know, the more I think about it, this could be the way in which to finally build a world full of peace, as everyone was Divinely Guided from WITHIN by The God of their being.
Pushing past the limits of what people think the disabled are capable of
By THEA RUTHERFORD ~ Guardian National Correspondent ~ thea@nasguard.com:
Jerome Thompson didn't waste much time questioning what he calls a "vision from God" to drive a boat around Nassau and Paradise Island. The vision came in February 2008. Fourteen months later Thompson went into training. By summer 2009, with the wind in his hair and the sun on his face, the president of Adventures Unlimited Bahamas had established his company with the biggest adventure of all.
Teach your children well
Imagine starting your life over from the day of birth, armed with all you've learned over the years about a poor diet and sedentary lifestyle. Would you change anything? Chances are, you'd start out right by eating sensibly and exercising regularly.
Now that you're a parent, that hindsight can turn into valuable foresight. Are you sharing what you've learned as you raise your children? Or do you figure that kids' bodies can bounce back from the ill effects of fast food and sugary snacks?
Ringworm in cats
Ringworm is not a worm at all it is actually a very common fungal skin infection among cats that affects the hair, skin and nails (some dogs can be affected and it can also be spread to humans). Those with a lowered immune response are especially vulnerable to the risk of ringworm contagion. Though ringworm in cats often clears up on its own with time, the risk of contagion means that you should be aware of its symptoms, transmission and treatment.
There are three species of fungi that cause disease in dogs and cats: Microsporum gypseum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, and Microsporum canis. Microsporum canis is the most commonly seen and can produce lesions on humans. The fungus that causes ringworm is usually found on the infected animal or in its living quarters. Fungal spores can also be found outdoors, in the dirt.
The meditation zone
Hardly a week goes by, when I don't hear someone, some expert in the field of healing the Total Person, express the vital importance of Daily Meditation. So, what is meditation, many may say? Well, the best way that I can explain it is this. To meditate, a person needs to go to a 'Quiet Place', sit in a chair with one's back upright, and feet firmly on the floor. When in that position, either in complete silence, or with some appropriate calming, quiet background music playing softly, one should close the eyes and commence breathing deeply. As you relax, you also focus on a pivotal point, like your 'Inner Eye' which is located in the middle of your forehead. So, meditation is a form of relaxation, coupled with concentration.
Dr. Paul Masters President of The University of Metaphysics and an expert in the field of meditation, coined the phrase which is the title of this article 'The meditation zone' many years ago, and he refers to it as, halfway between wakefulness and sleep. Now, when a person gets into this 'Meditation Zone' where they are both relaxed, whilst concentrating on the pure power of the actual state that they're in, one can do several things.
Give a gift of life
By STAFF WRITER ~ Nassau Guardian:
Heart disease is the number one killer of persons in The Bahamas. Heart disease does not discriminate between race, gender or age. Sadly, for many, heart care is not cheap, nor affordable without assistance. As such, in the midst of economic uncertainty, increasing unemployment and rising health cost, there is a serious need to help to treat and prevent heart problems in others, particularly children.
Corruption in the bedroom
Pastors and politicians are powerful human beings. It is also true that no other human being on earth has the respect, honor and privilege that pastors have not even heads of state.
Politicians have lots of privileges that are often abused because of their own greed for power, and too many pastors and politicians live in a dark world of secret sexual fantasies and inappropriate behaviors. Too many pastors are themselves wounded and damaged material. They enter the ministry because it appeals to their need to be accepted and to become powerful. Instead of admitting to their own vulnerability, they allow their pride and ego to take control. When their inordinate sexual desires raise their ugly heads, these pastors become weak and powerless. The more powerful they are in the pulpit and in the eyes of the believers, the weaker they are to oppose the sexual forces within them. |
