There's a new rib joint in town and this place is smokin'

By Shavaughn Moss:

There's a new joint in town and they're smokin' up the place with the most delicious hickory-smoked BBQ ribs that I've had in long time. I'll put my head on the "chopping block" and say it — they are probably some of the best ribs I've had in recent memory — except out of my own kitchen of course that I've had from anywhere on the island.

Since their opening approximately six weeks ago, Bahama Grill Café, located a quarter mile west of Arawak Cay, has become my new stomping grounds.

Suffice it to say I'd been holding off on telling you about this place because I wanted to broaden my horizons on what they offer, because after my first bite of their ribs, whether it was the baby back or pork, with sides of macaroni and cheese and vegetables, I was hooked, and couldn't seem to "wrap my brains" around anything else.

I did manage to tear myself away and did the BBQ chicken one time, but the ribs in my opinion still won out. I've yet to try their rotisserie chicken or their grilled conch, because when I step through the doors the ribs just call out to me, and I simply can't resist.

You see I love ribs that are tender and falling off the bones, but also love ribs that have a bit of bite to them. As long as they have that hint of sweetness — just the way I make them at home — I'm happy. Bahamas Grill also offers regular and a spicy sauce, but I'm a sweet ribs kinda gal.

Bahamas Grill also offers sides like baked beans, cole slaw, potato salad, peas and rice, cornbread, French fries and roasted corn, so you can have whatever floats your boat. My boat goes with mac 'n' cheese — the corner please, because I like a bit of crispy crunch — and veggies, which is me tipping my hat to health. But hold on isn't BBQ a healthy choice also? So I really thought I had myself covered with my New Year's promise to myself when I ate at Bahama Grill, but it seems as if the beautiful young lady, who happens to be the sister of the owner's wife is trying to throw that out the window.

It was the other day as I was picking up my usual ribs order that she encouraged me to try a different side and suggested the cornbread. I quickly turned her down. Since I was a little kid I've always hated corn bread. But, she "stuck her neck" out and said she bet I would like theirs. I acquiesced, hoping she would put it in with my order, and I could chuck it into the garbage when I got out of there. Luck was not on my side that day. She handed it to me in on a napkin and said enjoy. I was expected to eat it right then and there. I was mortified because I did not want her to see the look of horror on my face as I bit into a dry, horrid tasteless piece of cake/bread and screwed up my face gagging for water. But with her looking at me expectantly I gingerly broke off a piece and put it into my mouth. I was shocked when I found myself putting another piece into my mouth, and offering a pinch to my mom Jestina to try since she was with me.

Actually it was good. A little sweet and of a cake texture, the taste had me going up to the lady and asking her to switch out one of the sides I'd ordered for a side of cornbread. She just smiled. I'll give it to her, she really knows her stuff.

If you haven't yet heard about Bahama Grill Café, and I can't see how come, because it's practically one of the hottest, newest takeaways around right now, and you need to run not walk to this newest joint for a taste of their hickory smoked BBQ ribs and BBQ chicken which I can vouch for. But the ribs get my vote on any given day.

I can honestly say that I have yet to try the grilled conch or the rotisserie chicken, because I've simply been stuck on ribs. I can't seem to get enough off them.

Besides delicious food, the fact that Bahama Grill also delivers and that delivery is practically anywhere on New Providence is something that I also find attractive. This means that wherever I am, and if I get a hankering for their ribs, as long as I have an order that is valued at $20 or more, I can get it delivered for a nominal fee of between $2 and $5 — hope this never changes.
