      The Dan Carrow story

I have mentioned before the wonderful lecture which Dr. Wayne Dyer recently delivered on PBS titled 'Excuses Begone'. The lecture highlighted the myriad of excuses that human beings the world over, seem to conjure up as to exactly why they can't accomplish something in life, for example: 'I don't have the time', I'm too old', 'I don't have the qualifications', 'I don't have the necessary finances', 'I'm too small', 'I'm too tall', etc.

Now, in the third and final segment of his presentation on PBS Dr. Dyer introduced a really remarkable man to the audience with an unbelievable story by the name of Dan Carrow. When Dan Carrow was just two years of age, he wandered into the garage at his home and knocked over a can of gasoline. Now there was a water heater in the garage with a pilot light on it, which ignited the gasoline causing a huge fire. Dan Carrow suffered severe burns over 80% of his body.

He spent the next two years in hospital and underwent some 80 surgeries. After his final surgery, the doctors proceeded to take the bandages off his hands and his fingers fell off. As they took the bandages off his feet, his toes fell off. Now, when Dan Carrow initially took the stage during the Wayne Dyer show, he told the story of how, when he first went to Kindergarten at age five, he was unable to do as the other children did, which was to tie his shoelaces. However, he was a most determined young man and thus stayed with the task at hand until he finally mastered it at age twelve, some seven years later....what determination!

Now once he had mastered that simple task, he concluded that he could do anything that he set his mind to do, in spite of his obvious handicap. Believe it or not, today Dan Carrow plays drums for a living, and into the bargain, is indeed an excellent drummer who has played with many of the leading jazz bands in New Orleans, which is where he's from.

He puts a large rubber band on his right stub and pushes the drum stick through the band. On his left stub he has a thumb with which he manages to grip the other drum stick. On the show on PBS he gave a demonstration of how great he really is as a drummer. After his stunning solo, which brought the house down, as the saying goes; I vowed that I will never, ever make another excuse for not being able to do something, for the rest of my life!

Now, let's think about this TRUE STORY for a moment. Dan Carrow could have understandably said "I can't play drums I have no fingers", he could have made that most plausible excuse. But My Friend, he didn't, he was determined to play drums as music was in his blood, and he persevered until he became the accomplished, polished drummer he is today.

Now if Dan Carrow can do what he did under these very real circumstances, don't you ever again say, that you can't do something, for if you do, you'll really sound completely ridiculous!
