A 14-member Bahamian national team expected to represent the country at the Central American and Caribbean Confederation (CCCAN) Swimming Championships in Venezuela next month was recently ratified.
The CCCAN serves as a 2010 Olympic Youth Games qualifier. Competition will be held in four age groups for boys and girls, namely 11-12, 13-14, 15-17 and 18-and-over.
Five girls have been named to the team. Ashley Butler will swim in the 15-17 age group, and will be competing in the 50 and 100-meter butterfly, and the 50 and 100-meter freestyle events. Bria Deveaux will swim in the 13-14 division, and will be swimming in the 50 and 200-meter butterfly, the 200 and 400-meter Individual Medley and the 50, 100, 200 and 400-meter freestyle events.
Laura Morley will swim in the 11-12 age group and will be looking to medal in eight events, the 50, 100 and 200-meter breaststroke, the 100 and 200-meter backstroke, the 200 and 400-meter freestyle and the 200-meter Individual Medley events.
Taryn Smith will also swim in the 11-12 age group and will be focusing on six different events, the 50 and 100-meter butterfly, the 50 and 100-meter freestyle, the 50-meter backstroke and the 200-meter Individual Medley events.
Eight events will be the focus of 15-17 age group swimmer Ariel Weech. They will include the 50, 100 and 200-meter backstroke, the 50 and 100-meter butterfly and the 50, 100 and 200-meter freestyle events.
Nine boys make up the remainder of the team. Dionisio Carey will compete in the 11-12 age group and will swim in the 50, 100 and 200-meter freestyle, the 50 and 100-meter butterfly and the 50, 100 and 200-meter backstroke events. Inoa Charlton, at age 21, will focus on the 50 and 100-meter butterfly and the 50 and 100-meter freestyle events.
Evante Gibson will swim in the 13-14 division in the 50 and 100-meter butterfly, the 200-meter Individual Medley, the 50-meter freestyle, the 50 and 100-meter butterfly, and the 400 and 800-meter freestyle relays, and the 400-meter medley relay. Matthew Lowe will also swim in the 13-14 division and is set to compete in the 100 and 200-meter butterfly, the 200-meter backstroke, the 200 and 400-meter Individual Medley, the 200, 400 and 1,500-meter freestyle, the 400-meter medley relay and the 400 and 800-meter freestyle relays.
Toby McCarroll, in the 13-14 division, will be competing in the 50, 100 and 200-meter breast stroke, the 200-meter freestyle, the 400-meter medley relay, and the 400 and 800-meter freestyle relays. Michael McIntosh will compete in the 18-and-over division, and he plans to swim in the 50, 100 and 200-meter breast stroke, the 200-meter Individual Medley, and the 50 and 100-meter freestyle events.
Laron Morley, in the 13-14 division, will compete in the 50 and 100-meter backstroke, the 50-meter butterfly, the 50 and 100-meter freestyle, the 400-meter medley relay, and the 400 and the 800-meter freestyle relays. For Armando Moss in the 16-17 age group, he will compete in the 50 and 100-meter butterfly and the 50 and 100-meter freestyle events. Dustin Tynes, in the 11-12 division, is expected to represent the country in the 50 and 200-meter breast stroke, the 50 and 100-meter butterfly, the 200-meter Individual Medley and the 50, 100 and 200-meter freestyle events.
Other countries expected to attend the championships include the Netherlands Antilles, Guatemala, Antigua and Barbuda, Honduras, Aruba, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Jamaica, Barbados, Mexico, Bermuda, Nicaragua, the Cayman Islands, Panama, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, Cuba, St. Lucia, Dominica, Trinidad and Tobago, the Dominican Republic, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, El Salvador and Grenada.
