Local boxer to make big impression with Junkanoo and boxing combo

Former British Commonwealth Welterweight boxer Steven "The Heat" Larrimore is looking to host his own very first amateur community boxing and Junkanoo show at Christie Park, Nassau Street, next Wednesday.

Similar to the Ray Minus end of year amateur boxing show that was held at the South Beach Police Station on Nov. 23rd, Larrimore said the community idea first started with icon boxer Leonard "Boston Blackie" Miller.

"In one way I'm following the trend but this started a long time ago with Leonard 'Boston Blackie.' I was one of his students and he went out hosting community shows years ago. It just didn't started with Ray Minus, no, it started a long time ago with Leonard 'Boston Blackie.' So I prefer to give him that credit," he said Thursday.

Hosted by the Heat Lion Heart Amateur Boxing Club, which is managed by Larrimore this is a year end boxing event for the club. On the card for that evening are eight amateur non-titled matches.

The main event will focus on the heavyweight category between 200 pounder James McKenzie of Lion Heart Club, and his opponent Rorey Kemp who hails from the Amateur Champion Boxing Club.

Larrimore further added that the show was for the community especially for the folks in the Pitch Road area where he grew up.

"I want to give something back to the youths in that area and I also want to give back to the groves in that area and to let them know that this is what I come to bring back to them. Also the show will stage one of their very own who grew-up in the area, McKenzie," he said. "We are doing this more for him to let his counterparts know in that area what boxing is all about and what he is getting out of it."

Added to the boxing highlight Larrimore further said that 'Barabbas and the Tribe' are expected to add some Junkanoo entertainment to the event.

"They will be having their practice the same night as the boxing show and they want to also give the public a preview of what Junkanoo is going to be come Boxing Day and New Year's Day. So the public is not only going to get boxing they are going to get entertainment too. It will be more like a double feature," he said.
