Snakes battle in the GSSSA

By SHELDON LONGLEY ~ NG Sports Editor ~ slongley@nasguard.com:

Senior Girls ~ Cobras 43, Rattlers 27

The C.I. Gibson Rattlers and the C.C. Sweeting Cobras have certainly had their share of senior girls basketball titles in the Government Secondary Schools Sports Association (GSSSA) this past decade, but both failed to make the playoffs last year, and now both are trying to battle themselves back to the top.

It would be the latter which would prevail yesterday at the D.W. Davis Gym though. The Cobras used their quickness to slither past the Rattlers, 43-27, improving their win/loss record to 3-2 on the season. The Rattlers evened off at 2-2 as the league nears its midway point.

"I feel good about the win. We have been doing a little bit more practicing and they just executed on the court today," said Cobras' Head Coach Rhonda Grant. "They are pressing the ball and that worked for us today," she added.

Terrinique Roberts paced the Cobras with a game-high 19 points yesterday. Jaynell Cox added 12 and Paula Rolle scored seven. They got out to an early lead and never looked back, leading by as many as 22 points in the game. By the end of the first half, the Cobras were already ahead, 26-10.

"We still have a long way to go but we are getting there," said Grant. "GHS gave us a shock in our last game so we needed to come out here and re-assert ourselves today. We played much better today and hopefully we could continue it."

The Rattlers, which won three straight GSSSA titles from 2005-2007 and made it to the championship series four straight times this decade, were led by Robin Gibson with 15 points yesterday. Lornika Seraphin added six, all coming in the second half.

Senior Girls

Knights 29, Pacers 20

The C.R. Walker Knights remained unbeaten in the GSSSA this year, as they continue their quest to become just the second senior girls basketball team to win three straight GSSSA titles this year.

They haven't had a serious push in any of their games this year, but the upstart R.M. Bailey Pacers weren't intimidated. The Knights came into the game with a 3-0 win/loss record this year, while the Pacers were winless in two games. However, the Pacers gave them an intense battle, losing by just nine points, 29-20. It was the closest margin of victory for the Knights this year.

"Any time that you are the defending champions, everyone will come after you with their 'A' game, so it definitely won't be easy for us," said Knights' Head Coach Ken Lightbourne. "R.M. Bailey hasn't won a game this year and they gave us one of the toughest challenges that we have had this season so any one of the teams could rise up and give us a challenge," he added.

Still, the two-time defending champions, Knights, pulled away when they needed to, to remain perfect on the season.

Pamela Bethel led the Knights in scoring yesterday with 11 points. Ke'edrah Hanna added seven points and Leshea Grant added four.

"I think that the problem that we will have is the same problem that we had today in that they are over-confident. Because they are the two-time champions and because they are undefeated, they won't take the challenges seriously. They might think that the other teams will sit back and let them roll over them but that is not going to happen," said Lightbourne.

Latasa Armbrister led the Pacers with seven points yesterday and Tonia Kaye Johnson added all six of her points in the second half.

Senior Boys

Stingrays 67, Mystic Marlins 57

The C.V. Bethel Stingrays evened off at 2-2 in the GSSSA standings with a 67-57 win over the Doris Johnson Mystic Marlins yesterday evening at the D.W. Davis Gym. The Marlins remained winless on the year, dropping to 0-3.

Avery Armbrister paced the Stingrays with a game-high 16 points. Patrico Leadon added 15 and Travis Dawkins contributed 12. The Mystic Marlins were led by Steve Louis, who was the only player in double figures for them, with 15 points. Barry Ferguson added nine points for the Mystic Marlins.
