An original concept and a lot of fun - this was how the 'Bahamas World Cup' has been described by its supporters.
The Bahamas is truly a melting pot of cultures, so on Sunday, September 6, 16 teams from countries all over the world will take the field at Winton Rugby Centre for a day-long tournament. According to event organizer, Ely Miles, "there are people living in Nassau from a wide range of countries, many of which are soccer-playing nations. This seemed like a good opportunity to bring people together for a few games and a lot of fun."
People from The Bahamas, England, Jamaica, Haiti, Brazil, Uruguay, Europe, Canada, the United States, Switzerland, Spain, Mexico, Scotland and Peru will compete against each other during this Sunday's Bahamas World Cup Soccer Tournament, scheduled to kick off at 12 noon. Corporate sponsors throwing their financial support behind this year's tournament include Bahamas Local.com, Sands Beer and Aquapure.
According to Miles, whose primary involvement is with rugby, "the national men's rugby team is heading to Mexico in November and we were trying to come up with some creative fundraising ideas. Several soccer teams also utilize our playing facility at Winton and we agreed that this was an original enough concept and that there might be some interest. I've been overwhelmed by the response, we could have 24 teams if we wanted them, but decided that from an organizational standpoint, there needed to be a cut-off."
"There are several hundred residents of Nassau from all over the world whose common language is soccer. The 'Bahamas World Cup' tournament is a fun event aimed at bringing them together," continued Miles, who encouraged soccer enthusiasts to come out and support their favorite teams and countries by attending Sunday's event.
Miles also thanked this year's sponsors, Bahamas Local.com, Sands Beer and Aquapure for their tremendous support. Bahamas Local.com's executive team headed by Jason McDowall, CEO; Dayne D'Aguilar, Shareholder; and Kurt Melnechuk, Director of Marketing and Sales commented: "Bahamas Local.com is once again delighted to support such a worthy cause such as Bahamas Youth Rugby which plays an instrumental role in the development of our nation's youth by providing them with great sportsmanship, social and character building skills."
Executives of the user-friendly search engine and directory, which has fast become a household name in The Bahamas encouraged other local entities from corporate Bahamas to support sporting organizations such as Bahamas Rugby.
Miles noted that should they have 16 teams, the format will be four divisions of four teams each. He said first and second place will go into the Cup Competition, and third and fourth into the Plate (Consolation Cup). The winners will be presented with trophies.
