Obed to be added to Wall of Fame
By PERRY SCAVELLA NG Sports Reporter
Bahamas Amateur Boxing Federation president Wellington Miller wants the Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, Neville Wisdom, to place Elisha Obed, former 1975 Junior Middleweight World Boxing Champion picture on the Wall of Fame before Christmas Day. With five days before Christmas Miller said the picture would be a Christmas present to both the local boxers and the boxing fans. "Well you know Christmas is planned around giving presents and is also planned on making everybody happy and that's the time you get presents," he said Thursday. "It will mean good to boxing because you have track and field athletes up there, you have tennis athletes up there, and you have sailing athletes up." In September Minister Wisdom recently added two pictures to the Wall of Fame of The Bahamas' first Olympic gold medalists Sir Durward Knowles and Cecil Cooke. Since then the Minister said that other Bahamian athletes will also adorn the Wall namely Obed; Thomas (Tommy) Augustus Robinson, Bahamas Commonwealth Games gold and silver medalist track athlete from 1958 to 1966; and Sloan Farrington, Olympic Sailing bronze medalist in 1956. Miller was pleased that the Minister decided to place Obed's picture on the Wall of Fame and said it would definitely be a great encouragement to local boxers. "That would be a big plus because that's just one of the things that we really need from him, Elisha Obed, to be showcased around the world," he said. Other Bahamian world class athlete portraits that adorn the Wall of Fame include: The Bahamas' Golden Girls 4x1 team Debbie Ferguson, Chandra Sturrup, Sevatheda Fynes, Eldece Clarke-Lewis; Bahamian tennis pro, Mark Knowles; 1992 Olympic triple jumper bronze medalist, Frank Rutherford; and World Class High Jumper, Troy Kemp.
