Mark and Mahesh fall in Paris

By KELSIE JOHNSON ~ NG Sports Reporter ~ kelsie@nasguard.com:

The week break taken by Bahamian tennis professional Mark Knowles and his Indian doubles partner Mahesh Bhupathi might have paid its toll on the team. They were defeated at the BNP Paribas Masters in Paris, France yesterday.

Knowles and Bhupathi were eliminated by Simon Aspelin and Paul Hanley, 6-4, 6-7 (6) and 10-7. The match, which lasted a little under two hours, saw Knowles and Bhupathi serve up six aces to their opponents' four. The team struggled on return points, winning only nine of 47 on first serves and five of 24 on second serves. The team was able to save five of six break points but wasn't able to break Aspelin and Hanley.

Knowles and Bhupathi were the tournament's number three seeds and received a bye into the second round. This is the first tournament for the team since the Shanghai ATP Masters, which was played in October.

At that tournament, Knowles and Bhupathi were defeated by Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Julien Benneteau in the semi-finals, 7-6 and 6-2. Knowles partnered with Michael Llodra at the Valencia Open 500 last week in Spain. The team was eliminated in the second round by the Spanish team of Marcel Granollers and Tommy Robredo, 7-5 and 6-4.

The Bahamian/Indian duo are the three number seeds at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, which is set to start November 22 in London, England.
