Butler's credibility questioned

The credibility of Sir Arlington Butler is now being questioned by many, who are astonished that the 'former' president of the Bahamas Olympic Association (BOA) left the island without properly canceling an election organized by him.

Butler had originally scheduled the election meeting for May 9, but later postponed it for today not realizing that he would be attending a Pan American Sports Organization (PASO) meeting. According to Butler, Mr. Mario Vazquez Rana, President of PASO and an executive member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), was suppose to attend a meeting. However, neither party is available due to the meeting being held in Guadalajara, Mexico.

It is being alleged that this attempt by Butler is just one of his many 'conveying' ways to delay the forward movement of the 'newly elected' officers in the BOA, who took office on March 6, of this year.

Even though the 'newly' elected officers are moving on with the daily governance of the association, vice president of the association, Harcourt Rolle said that the meeting scheduled by Butler is not warranted.

"It is interesting because I was noticing in the newspaper the comments and waiting to see whether or not if he was going to officially announce that the meeting has been put off," said Rolle, who officially declared that he did not see it but heard from a colleague that it was put off.

"Nothing was sent here and of course he had no obligation of sending anything here. He is not connected to this organization, other than the fact that he is the past president."

The meeting was an attempt, on Butler's behalf, to ensure clarity in the association's electoral process and that the elections are being held under the International Olympic Committee constitution.

However, Rolle revealed that even though Butler went to great measures inviting Rana, he nor the executive members would be attending. He also revealed that the association is moving forward the daily agenda.

"No," said Rolle, "It would look ridiculous for us participating in a meeting that is called by somebody who has no connections with the Olympic Association.

"We've had our elections on March 6, that is it. We were always moving forward. Do you know the processing that has been going on for the past several months to have all the athletes and the officials, along with the newspaper personnel, to make sure that they are in a position to go to the games without any special hassling? All of those things took time and energy."

Despite Rolle's comments, Butler revealed that he is the Chef De Mission of the Olympic Games. This claim was heavily refuted by Rolle, who announced that he had no knowledge about that fact.

He said that bold statement shows Butler's attitude, stating that he (Butler) appointed himself Chef De Mission.

He said: "Who is he? The appointment of a Chef is always made by the executive committee of the BOA. So apparently he is a one-man BOA, as far as he is concerned he is a one-man BOA in exile."

Rolle also noted the fact that Butler always mentions that he no longer is interested in being the president of the BOA, stating that his excuse is wanting to see the procedure is done properly.

Butler is expected to return to New Providence on Monday.
