'CASI Week' starts today in The Bahamas

By KELSIE JOHNSON ~ NG Sports Reporter ~ kelsie@nasguard.com:

Sir Durward Knowles, Thomas Augustus Robinson and the members of the 2000 Bahamian 'Golden Girls' are among the honorees at this year's Caribbean Awards Sports Icons (CASI) banquet, set for this Friday at SuperClubs Breezes.

The awards banquet is in its second year and is designed to honor all of the top athletes from around the region over the last 70 years – dating back to the 1940s. These athletes, who competed in various disciplines, were said to have enhanced the region by rising above the disadvantages. They are also being viewed as the best competitors who were able to shine over other athletes from around the world.

Knowles will be handed the International Sailing Extraordinaire Award while Robinson and the Golden Girls will receive Lifetime Achievement honors. The members of the Golden Girls include Savetheda Fynes, Debbie Ferguson-McKenzie, Chandra Sturrup, Eldece Clarke-Lewis and Pauline Davis-Thompson. The team won the gold medal in the 4x100 meters relay at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia.

The nominees for this year's awards includes Sir Everton Weekes from Barbados, Sir Vivian Richards from Antigua & Barbuda, Brian Lara from Trinidad & Tobago, Clive Lloyd (CBE) from Guyana and Michael Holding from Jamaica in cricket. In football/soccer, the nominees are Clyde Best from Bermuda, Dwight Yorke from Trinidad & Tobago, Leroy 'Uncle Lee' Archer from The Bahamas and Theodore Whitmore from Jamaica.

The male athletes in track and field nominated include Javier Sotomayer from Cuba, Lennox Miller from Jamaica, Troy Kemp from The Bahamas, Wendell Motley and Haseley Crawford from Trinidad & Tobago, and Donald Quarrie, Usain Bolt and George Rhoden all from Jamaica. In female athletics, the nominees are Tonique Williams-Darling and Debbie Ferguson-McKenzie from The Bahamas, Merlene Ottey, Bridgette Foster-Hylton and Shelly-Ann Fraser from Jamaica, and Ana Fedelia Quirot from Cuba. In basketball, the winner for the 2009 CASI award will be chosen from Mychal Thompson and Rick Fox from The Bahamas, Patrick Ewing from Jamaica, Olden Polynice from Haiti and Tim Duncan from the U.S.Virgin Islands.

The CASI awards banquet is just one of many activities planned for this week. On Wednesday, a CASI reception will be held. At this reception, three of The Bahamas' top boxers will be inducted into the Bahamas Boxing Commission's inaugural Hall of Fame Class. The three persons inducted into the class of 2009 are William 'Yama Bahama' Butler Jr., Elisha Obed and Gomeo Brennan.

On Thursday, boxers from The Bahamas will challenge a team of boxers from the Cayman Islands. This event will be held on the Carmichael Road Police Compound. CASI Regional Director Fred Sturrup is pleased to have the award banquet in The Bahamas, stating that it will be event for the country. Sturrup, who gave the keynote address at the first ceremony in Jamaica, stated that the English-speaking Caribbean has been excelling in sports for a very long time.

He noted the accomplishments of Sloane Farrington and Sir Durward Knowles at the World Championships in Los Angeles. He also thanked persons like Arthur Wint, George Rhoden, Herb McKenley and Leslie Laing – the Jamaicans who won gold in the 1600 meters (m) relay at the Olympics in Helsinki.

In 1948, Wint captured gold in the men's 400m and a silver in the 800m. Sturrup described the events as the first explosion of the Caribbean, on the world scene. It is this, Sturrup said, CASI is geared toward - highlighting all the people from that date up to now.
