Tyrone Sawyer understands the role of sports tourism

By FRED STURRUP ~ NG Associate Editor ~ frederick@nasguard.com:

Tyrone Sawyer is excited about the sports climate in the country. He feels that it relates very well to tourism and is certain that such a marriage could only bode well for The Bahamas.

This general common sense approach ought to enable him to go far in his new role. I believe that if he is given a chance, reasonable latitude and appropriate funding, he will bring about a revolution of sorts in Bahamian sports tourism. At the Caribbean Awards Sports Icons Dinner Awards on Friday past, he seemed to be taking the proceedings in with big gulps. When he came on stage to receive the lifetime achievement awards on behalf of the original Golden Girls, he whispered "this is just great."

He is positioned to make it better in The Bahamas with sports tourism.

Minister of Tourism Vincent Vanderpool-Wallace has the ideal person in place to deliver what he and I talked about over a year ago in Beijing, China. The minister advocates what he calls "real sports tourism". He has little tolerance for events that only highlight super stars from professional leagues and do little or nothing to enhance our tourism industry. He likes the nuts and bolts situations that tie Bahamians into the industry in a fundamental way and produces short-term and long-term positives for sports tourism.

Well, Sawyer's thought process is the same. I look forward to an interesting 2010. If there is meaningful focus on sports tourism by the ministry machinery, Sawyer could cause some quality happenings. His background is steeped in successful stints at Tourism and at Bahamasair, the national flag carrier. His venture into the private sector world produced a landmark achievement.

Sawyer is the man behind the magic of the fast ferry business. This is the man who now is concentrating on doing his part to make sports tourism explode in The Bahamas. The sports family members are delighted. A positive flow radiates from Sawyer. Indeed, if given the chance, he will do well and sports tourism in The Bahamas will boom.
